Resurfacing:
I have all new Tilton 7.25 replacement clutch parts to install on my Kent flywheel and I'd like the flywheel to be resurfaced (not completely flat and some small pits... likely 0.005" max to clean up.) I spoke with a couple of local automotive machine shops, and all have grinder type flywheel resurface equipment and do stepped resurfacing. I'm comfortable they can hold the required 0.098" - 0.100" step height tolerance specified by Tilton. My concern is Jake's book calls out the step OD as 7.355" - 7.357" and I'm not sure why this tight tolerance is needed unless it is to help locate and center the clutch cover. My flywheel currently meets this spec., and the cover is a very tight fit over the step diameter (I can't find any spec. for this on Tilton's website.) After watching some YouTube videos, I'm having a hard time believing a simple centering cone, used to hold down the flywheel on the grinder type resurface machine, is going to allow them to hold this diameter tolerance.
Are our flywheels set up with "F3" clutches typically resurfaced on a grinder or lathe?
Dynamic Balance:
I had to replace the above flywheel's 110-tooth ring gear with a 135-tooth ring gear so I can use the engine in my Van Diemen. This, along with the replacement clutch parts has obviously had an impact on the balance. Since I can't rebalance the entire assembly, would it help if I have the flywheel / clutch assembly re-balanced before bolting back up?
I'm thinking I should just box the flywheel / clutch parts up and ship it to a Kent engine builder to resurface and balance to be safe?
