I don’t know about “crazy,” that’s what all racers, climbers, and vacuum salespeople are to anyone experiencing push on a shopping cart.

I’d go with “supremely precise at superhuman levels.”

But make no mistake… when this event is banned, I’m moving to a different planet.

Big ones on that rider! I can only imagine how much sim time they have to remember all those corners?

    Default Crazy

There is a pretty famous Psychiatrist named Park Dietz on YouTube and he is explaining to a serial killer named Richard Kuklinski what characterizes a psychopath and how among other characteristics they have no fear. His first example of these kinds of people are racing drivers.

He's also wrong. Every race car driver I've ever known compartmentalizes fear when in the car. The more experienced, the better able to keep it compartmentalized IN THE CAR. Outside the car not so much. No more than anyone else, but no less. It's part and parcel of the ability to achieve a level of focus that makes routine what those who've never raced can't imagine.

Totally on board with ^ this ^ take.

I’ve witnessed (and survived) the same in mountaineering. Absolutely there’s fear, at least when one expects to see 30 — meaning it’s not at all about *not having fear* as it is performing even when scared to sweaty palms.

That psychiatrist’s comparing fear management to psychopathy, one would hope, should see his office with a new-looking couch regardless of its age. Frankly, that analysis is so dim-witted that he has no business muddling with patient crises beyond whether Kung Pao or curry is a better choice.

How he gained notoriety is beyond me; but I’ll take Kung Pao, extra hot, on fried rice, hot oil, no green peppers.

The last people that I would expect to understand how athletes conquer and compartmentalize their fear would be shrinks, since almost none of them have ever even tried anything where they had to overcome fear - but they are SOOOO sure that they are right.

But I still think that these guys are more than just a bit nuts!

There was a self help guru who raced pro FSV. Completely self absorbed behind the wheel and crashed out himself and others almost every race. The only thing more annoying were his acolytes flooding the paddock.

We delivered two of his chassis, plus a tub and spare motor, from San Mateo to Boulder in 1980… presuming you mean Werner.

Sad to hear that, Bill. Mike’s right, and gather up your friend and go to the Isle.
