    Default Hewland MK8/9 Gear Condition?

Happy New Year. I purchased my first FF in December and I'm currently building up my gear set catalog. This is all very new to me and I'm unsure of exactly what to look for in pictures of various gear sets I've looked at to purchase. Could someone post some pictures of what a good set compared to a bad set of gears looks like?

I currently need the following if anyone has these for sale.

    20/30 22/28 25/27

    Thanks

    Scott

I don't have a picture, but the first thing to inspect is the condition of the dogs on the side of the gear. Avoid anything that is chipped, rounded-off, broken or obviously with heavy wear. New dogs have sharply-defined edges. A small amount of wear is acceptable and unavoidable, given their purpose, but if it looks tired or battered, avoid!

If the dogs are good, the same notes apply to gear teeth - so chips out, gouges, scrapes, worn-down faces are all rejects.

Personally I wouldn't be concerned about the occasional light rust mark on gears that have been stored, but if it's red and furry, give it a miss!

Make sure you're getting a real pair too, eg. later gears from later M-series should both be marked as such.

    Default Hewland

20-30 I would describe as good to very good as an example.

The stuff on the gears are a protectant I spray them prior to storage and cleans off easily.
where in the PNW are you needing those gears?

Here is what a bad LD200 gear set I had looks like. This 24:26 top gear set was causing the transmission to not spin freely by hand while I had the transmission off the car. It felt notchy and weird rather than smooth like it should. Had to take parts out one at a time to figure it out. After this was discovered I replaced it with a new one and the transmission spun easily and freely. You can see the damage on the inside of the teeth. Nice ride, vintage FF has some of the coolest looking cars.

That 25/26 you have will work fine at both Pacific and The Ridge. YMMV.
