    Default Gearbox/axle question

    Hi, not new to racing but new to sports racers and I jumped in the deep end. My pace is very slow and my car is still not reliable, but I’m fixing issues, learning, and having a great time!

    My car uses a Hewland FTR gearbox, and I just had it rebuilt. Inspecting the rear of the car, on one side of the gearbox I found a mess of pink grease splattered about the left gearbox/axle area as shown in the photo. I am still quite ignorant about how the gearbox, differential, and axle assemblies and their lubrication systems work. I’m hoping to learn.

    Can you experienced racers help me to understand what my pink greasy mess is, what it likely means, and what I should do aside from cleaning it up?

    On the CV Boot you can see a zip tie holding one end of it to the drive shaft. On the other end of the CV boot there should be a zip tie or something to seal it as well. Look and see if that is in place or is possibly missing. Compare this to the boot on the left side of car.

    Looks very much like CV joint grease - Redline CV-2?

    As per CGOffroad's post inspect the rubber boot on that side as the clip/tie is either loose or missing, or the boot itself is split.

    Default Gearbox issues

    Looks to me to be Red Line CV1 grease from the inner CV joint. I’m guessing the CV joint seal to the transmission drive flange isn’t sealed properly. I use regular silicone to seal that area as well as the boot flange to the CV joint on outside of the joint. You’ll have to remove the joint, clean up the surfaces and reapply silicone. CV 1 is great stuff (what I use), and be sure to fill the CV joint with it prior to sealing it up.

    Thank you all!

    As you suspected, the left CV joint’s inboard zip tie is missing, and an inboard zip tie is present on the right side. Now that you’ve said it, it looks quite plain to see. I’ll get some redline CV joint grease, watch a few videos, and get it repacked and ziptied like the other side.
