Correct me if I am mistaken, but the only modification to a stock VW case is to machine the bore to accommodate the Hewland reverse idler spigot. Just checking for a friend.

Yes, I'm fairly sure that's the only 'required' modification, though there are various others depending on installation, spec, etc.
Yes . the reverse spigot bore needs to be machined down.
The only other small mods is to drill a hole in the bulk head right under the pinion bearing . this will help as an oil passage .
And on some cases you will need to lightly clearance the inside of the case for clearance on the 1st/rev fork
