    Default Shifter lever and knob

    Where can I purchase something similar or is this custom? It will not screw off.

    It might be glued to the tread. If you aren’t going to use the wood part again just break or burn it off the metal. You could make a new “handle” out of round nylon or aluminum and taper to comfort your hand. Or you might find the inner metal threaded piece maybe be able to have just a knob attached.

    Actually looks like a standard file handle. They come in various sizes and can be purchased at hardware & tool supply stores.

    I’m not talking about the handle I’m talking about the whole shifter mechanism. I can’t get the handle off because I was hoping it was going to be a screw on standard handle. I just would like another option because I like to try some different style handles. I put it in a vise the base and I can turn the handle but it will not come off so it’s not screwed on as far as I can tell.

    As I mentioned before I think you will find it will be glued. All the levers I have refurbished have been threaded. If you aren’t going to use the handle again just put in in the vise and us a chisel or screwdriver and cut it off.

    Yes, I could definitely do that but then how am I going to fabricate a new handle or I wish I could get a threaded piece just like that where I could change and try different handles. That’s what I would like is a standard thread so I can try different knobs.

    Default Shifter lever and knob

    Titan MKIV converted to a sports racer with a Yamaha R1, 2002 motor. I actually have an idea. I was looking and they make a shift lever adapter for shift levers that don’t have threads, and this will allow me to put a thread on. Obviously, I will have to destroy the wood handle, but this gives me an option. I’ve just got to measure the width of the steel shaft to make sure this adapter will fit. If it works, I will put a picture on here in case somebody ever faces this again.

    Or… just remove the knob (or destroy it) and thread the exposed shaft if not already threaded.. easier than getting an adapter and won’t add height.

    Yours has either got to be screwed on on pushed on so, if it definitely isn't the former, I'd be inclined to hold the lever part and give the knob a few tap with a hammer to see if it comes off that way!

    Once you have removed it you'll have a better idea of what the shaft looks like. It might even be possible to cut a thread directly onto it.

    Cut the wood longitudinally with a small cut off wheel, both sides.
    Split it open with a large screwdriver.
    Clean off the epoxy.
    Replacement wooden knobs are available in the race car part isle of Home Depot.
    Probably be worth seconds a lap.

    I’ll try the first part. Probably forego the racing isle of HD. I’ll be ok without being faster.

    Why don't you put some threads for the knob directly on that shifter.
    That adapter picture you posted looks like it'll make it all too long.

    What diameter is the shaft? Depending on that you have options on thread cutting:
    - Use a die to thread directly
    - Have a local machine shop turn down the end and thread

    In the space of the cockpit 54mm is a mile! You'll probably find interference when you go to shift.
    Also, those set screws simply will not hold in my opinion. You will find the whole assembly in your hand at some point!

    Find someone that can modify it to accept the new knob. Make sure the total length is no longer than the previous assembly.

    @beerbudgetracing…. You are 100% correct sir. The adapter worked and but only a short ball type shift knob worked bc it hits the dash frame!!! The wooden handle was ok just wish it was thicker!!!

    Off the shifter topic for a moment: what is that horizontal plate of sheet aluminum just outboard of the shifter for? In an accident, can it get driven towards you and slice you open?
