    There is nothing new. In the past a new entrant needed to contribute $250M to current entrants to makeup for the diluted prize fund payouts. The number is not good enough these days. They want something like $750M.

    That’s just insane. Little wonder there’s only 20 cars, and an average family can’t even attend a race.

    At the USGP in either 1989 or 1990, forty-one cars showed up — and it was GREAT. Pre-qualifying was one exceptional session.

    Ah well, IndyCar’s never been better.

    As someone who is relatively close to the situation. There is no news and all parties await the decisions of Formula 1 and the FIA. I can say that Andretti Global is proceding with plans to be a Formula 1 entrant

    Stefano Domenicali has been quoted as saying that 10 teams are more than enough. Maybe, one team should be eliminated each year until there is just enough.

    I wouldn't be opposed to a rule that any team finishing last 3 years in a row is out if another bid is ready to play.

    Why does anyone care? If you chose to build a car and can do so within the rules and show up you get to play. If it gets to be to many then you have to qualify to race. Just like SCCA has been with extremely popular classes.

    It shouldn't cost anyone 100 million to join the club. Nothing exclusive about open wheel racing. Just political BS. If you have a car then go play.

    The Europeans have a, um, somewhat different system in place than what we colonists have developed. Adding a team would reduce the payout to the other teams, that's what the buy in fee is designed to ameliorate. It's a "refinement" to the old appearance fee scheme that paid drivers (and teams) just for showing up (recognizing that it's actually used in some U.S. oval track racing.)

    Call it socialism or whatever you like, it is very different from the more laissez faire capitalism that structures U.S. pro racing. Then, again, except for the top series, most U.S. "pro" road racing prize money starts by paying back entry fees.

    So does Liberty Media have the ability to do away with the fees?

    Would be interesting if they looked at the data and said "we predict adding 3 more teams would be worth $2bn/yr so w're dumping the fees for additional teams to join"

    It would take a new Concord agreement and that is not coming till 2026 and trust me the fee is going up. It will NEVER be eliminated or reduced
