Is there a way to sense what gear the transmission is in, and relay that information to my dash (Strada)? Is there a sender that senses the gear? How does this work to give indication what gear you are in?

We need to know we are in first when standing still. Math wont tell this. Some FM show the gear I'm the display. How do the sensors work? Where can we buy them?
Sequential gearboxes often have a rotary pot on the end of the shift barrel to signal position (and hence gear number) to the dash. Not sure anyone makes a system for an H pattern box. If you're stationary in an H pattern car, doesn't the gear stick basically tell you what gear you're in? (Sorry if I'm misinterpreting your question).

Well, then a sensor is probably the answer. BUT you probably won't find much here since all sensors in the gearbox are not allowed per the GCR. You'd have to do something externally.
With a computed gear position it'll show 1st standing still - but in any gear.
Are you sure the other FMs are really showing the actual selected gear?
I'm inclined to think they are not.
Maybe ask one of the other drivers/owners?

if you mean the black number in that overlaid graphic in the top right of the screen, how do you know how that is being generated?
it's quite possible that is a math channel calculation output being sent to the display.
Note right at the end of the video, about the 8:55 mark, the display says "N", but driver clearly is in gear and accelerating gently forward long before the number changes to "1" (probably a wrinkle in the math channel calculation "if/then's")
if you wanted to contact the video poster/ driver, apparently "Michael Wheldon?", the answer would be known quickly

In the AIM (that is shown in that video) gear is computed. You set it up in the AIM system by inputing the gear ratios. Not sure how it works with your system.
My AIM in my FM works - most of the time, but not always. Never had a problem finding first - unless I get confused, which DOES happen, then I get the zing and the pretty purple lights
