    Default Lazer Info Requested...

Hello! New to this group, and I'm looking for info on Lazer Mk 2 and 2.5 cars. I'm trying to build a 1/4 scale model of a Vee, and have chosen this car to start. I need measurements such as wheelbase, width of the frame at various parts, and dimensions of the various frame members, along with pics of a bare naked frame if possible. I don't need to be absolutely precise, but any information would REALLY be appreciated! Here's a pic of a 1/4 scale wheel I have modeled, and can post more if anyone is interested...

We have a Mk2.5, but aren’t anywhere near it. What an awesome project you’ve taken on.

I’ve made a reference that can hopefully help.

Edit: You’ve already spoken to my reference, so not sure what else you need.

    Enjoy the build.

Thank you E1pix! I am always looking for pics of the frame, and pics of any details. Please send me any pics you might have of your car. The Lazer is one good looking Formula Vee!!!

There are good pictures of Eric's Lazer in the for sale section:
    https://www.apexspeed.com/forums/sho...-5-Formula-Vee

Did you draw up your wheel and tire from scratch? If you go over to grabcad.com you can get CAD files of a lot of the stock vw parts (beam, wheels, engine, trans, shocks, etc.).

The basic dimensions are specified in the GCR:
    2. Weight and Dimensions
Minimum weight as qualified or raced, with driver: 1025 lbs.
    Wheel base, minimum: 81.5”
    Wheel base, maximum: 83.5”
Track, front: Standard VW – maximum 52.500”
Track, rear: 49.125” minimum, 50.750” maximum
Overall length, minimum: 123” (includes exhaust)
Overall length, maximum: 127” (includes exhaust)
Body height at firewall (bottom of frame to top of bodywork), minimum: 25”

The GCR also shows the minimum cross section around the engine:
The rear bodywork must have the ability to enclose the original Volkswagen fan shroud mounted in its stock location (see illustration in Section C.12).

Good luck. Looks like that will be a pretty cool project.

Appreciate your posting the link, Barret. Those are the only photos we have so far.

You’re welcome, happy to help. Sorry I can’t help more, we’re half the country from the car — and despite our season plans, we now may not get much closer for a while yet.

They’re great cars all-around, and with one of the most interesting histories in all of Vee. Barret is doing good work to save the 39 year-old marque from its prior, near-extinction, so all Kudos to him!

You probably know about this, but this site has quarter scale VW engine models. The woman on the ad looks excited, so they must be special - and if true to life, they have about 3.75 horsepower, Haha:

Thank you both for these responses! I have found a nice guy who is sharing measurements on the frame cross sections, etc to help scale up the frame. He has a MK II. Here's the engine kit for the model, along with a 3D printed tranny. Keen eyes will notice that is really an IRS transaxle, but I will be modifying it with different side plates with boots and swing axles. It's been fun so far!

Hi there from New Zealand...I thinking of building a model of a Vee I built back in the 90s and would like some measurements off the beam...The Grabcad model is good but wanting the trailing arm and spindle measurements if possible...

    Thanks in advance Crewe.
