stumbled on this thru Reddit. Shot on 70 mm, will probably still exceed the resolution capabilities of digital TV 20 years from now.

Just blows me away - F1 cars the size of a current FF, tire squeal in the corners, and the complete and total lack of any safety, not even hay bales around stuff like light posts - with square curbs!

And the practice was going on with some traffic at the same time.

I wonder what these guys would have thought about 'participation' trophies.

It sounds like Burl Ives narrating and I can't get the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer stop motion special out of my head while I'm watching.

1962 was when I first discovered Sports Car Graphic magazine and was immediately enamored with F1 and the Ferrari shark nosed cars (Phil Hill was an American !!). Imagine, roll bars as high as your ears! The first scenes showing the nose of the camera car made me wonder what the 500# camera did to it's handling. Another lasting memory was the Campari billboards -- I still drink it to this day.
    Thanks for the memory.

I just rewatched 'Grand Prix' ,1966. The I would say that the safety features did not change much from 62' to 65-66'.

If I went back in time, using the same cars/engines, I am not sure that I would feel the need to make many safety improvements. Thinks just did not seem that unsafe. It is not like someone died at every race.

I'd also say racing was better when brakes were iron, and shifting was done with a lever.

The essence of racing is having more power from the car than the tires can put to the ground. The best driver is the one that can get more power to the ground more of the time than the competition.

Today's F1 cars should be running on tires of similar width.
