    Default Driver shoulder cover

What is the part called that is snapped into the cockpit around the drivers head and shoulders after they are strapped into the car? I’m sure it is aero of some sort as well as safety element but have never seen them available. Are these parts custom made for each chassis or are they available for sale somewhere? Any help and info is appreciated…. Thanks group!

I have only seen them used in professional series - F1, IndyCar, F2 etc.

If the driver sits low enough in the car such that the surround is at his ear level, it’s a safety device; if his entire helmet is above it, it’s merely cockpit aerodynamics…..

They are chassis specific and if it is properly designed and you sit low enough then it is a safety device. If you do not sit low enough or it is a poor design they can do more harm than good

They can severely impede your exit ! I had to help a kid out of his in tech once.
The latching mechanism was 'janky' and he couldn't get it unlatched.

In my Citation F2000, I sit so low that the FIA padding on the cockpit side structure functions as a head surround with only an inch or so between my helmet and the padding.

most drivers I know intend to just "burst" through it when exiting in an emergency; can't see wasting time fiddling with tiny fasteners

They're called a bolster among other terms.....made from padding - which can be custom molded - which is what I'll guess you're seeing.. You (sitting in the car with a helmet on and buddies to help make measures and cuttings) can make one - using padding like stuff available at Pegasus racing. It may end up being a not as pretty as seen on TV three piece piece held together with a bunch of duct tape and/or zip ties....but it may help save your neck

My Pro Mazda has one. They are sold by the supplier of the Pro Mazda parts in Arizona.

Fortunately I’m able to get in and out of the car without removing it, I just have to remove the steering wheel.
