    Default tool recommendation

I've had several different kinds of retaining ring pliers and they've run the gamut from cheap and fragile (harbor freight) to sturdy but worthless (the craftsman variety that uses a screwdriver handle to turn an expanding mechanism). I've managed to snap the tips off of a lot of them.

So my wife wanted Christmas recommendations and this is about the only tool I really need.

What products have you found to be very usable, and durable?

I concur with Dee - go with Snap-On/Blue-Point; but will add that you need to make sure you use the proper size tool for the snap ring tang holes, otherwise the tips will bend/break...

I have had good success buying them used on ebay.

Another thing: beware the look-alikes to Snap-On/Blue-Point, they look the same at a quick glance until you look real close and see that the tips aren't properly aligned to each other! They are cheap for a reason.

Clean out, debur the groove with a dental scaler. Not much of a Christmas present but will help with the next removal.
Just got large replacement tips for my KD/ goodwrench tool. Probably will be making stronger ones

I swear by the Knipex snap ring pliers. Fantastic quality, and they come in all of the sizes that you could possibly want. Only downside is that they aren't particularly cheap.

(For that matter, I swear by Knipex pliers in general.)

Even if they're not the very best quality, the selection allowing use of the right size for the right job could make quite a difference.

All of mine are either Waldes Truarc or Proto, and about 45 years old or more. No idea about their current quality.

    Default Knipex

I second the Knipex recommendation - they also do some magic slip joint pliers!
