Default I Just Got A (New to Me) Car!

    Hi guys.

I'm Danny and live in Hudson Valley NY. Eventually I'll be racing in NER, or possibly Challenge Cup.

I just purchased a 1992 BRD AFV-02. Originally, the car was owned by Robert Gunde. It was raced all over the place in the East, some Midwest, some South. Finished first in 1992 a couple times(with lap records!) at the hands of Greg Rice. Then it was raced by Doug Sean or Sea(can't read the cursive signatures). This was the last year the cars were made by BRD before BRD was sold to Bill Vallis in Ontario.

In 2008, the car went to Bill Ross(#55) who raced it all over the East Coast for ten years, quite successfully I might add.

After that, the car went to Dave Rodman in 2018, and has been sitting. Dave runs another BRD that he also purchased from Bill Ross.

No pics yet, I'll be going over the car with a fine-toothed comb. Get rid of surface rust, paint some stuff, lube and adjust. Got to replace the belts and clean it up, flush the brakes, finish installing the motor. The motor was supposedly rebuilt by Dave Carr, and has an hour or so on it. But sitting for 4 years, so at the minimum adjust the valves and change the oil and clean the carb out. Do I need new valve springs?

I'll need to put some kind of padding in the seat area, I don't need to sit as deep as taller guys, I'm 5'9". But I'm 220, so perfect size car for me.

Anyway, I'm excited to get going. I met a bunch of the guys at the spring Thompson Driver School and also a couple weeks ago at Lime Rock regional race.

It's really cool to me to have all the logbooks, there are three full ones! Plus I've got a new one to start.

    Welcome to the Madness.

We, too recently bought a Vee to run Majors in, starting in 2023. Maybe we’ll see you around.

    Enjoy.

PS — So far as your town, darned shame you cancelled Woodstock. ;-)

    That's funny!

I live in the hamlet of Wallkill, which is in Ulster County in the Town of Shawangunk.

The Wallkill you're talking about is the Town of Wallkill in Orange County(next county to the west).

So sorry, no cigar. "We" had nothing to do with canceling Woodstock LOL!

    Cheers

Congratulation on the purchase and good luck with the car! Just a quick correction on the names you mentioned. The correct names are Robert Guhde and Doug Seim. Both are still involved in racing (FFirst series), and are active on this board. So, if desired, could easily be contacted.

Thanks, Brian, that helps. I'll do compression and leakdown then, just to see where it's at now.

Jeffrey, I'm sure to get in touch. Having someone close that knows things is great!

GJ: Thanks for the name corrections. It's really hard to decipher some people's cursive!

Leak down is all you need. Actually all you really need to do is listen for escaping airflow noise from the exhaust tail pipe and the carb. That will tell you if you need a valve job. Flow out the crankcase breather is the check for bad rings. The leak down provides you with a value of the total leakages.

Thanks Hughie and Dave. I sent you an email Jeffrey.

    Just ordered a suit/gloves/socks/shoes/HANS. I've got a new SA2020 helmet.

I also ordered new belts, as the ones in there have long since expired.

On to find out the condition of the fuel cell. Then check out the missing clutch disc(I have a disc, but it's not in there) ...

New AGM battery arrives tomorrow, old one was 2015 and STONE dead, I couldn't bring it back. Believe me, I tried.

Next week I'm getting a physical so I'll file paperwork and should be good to go. I'm gonna try and get there for the OWDE in New Hampshire the first week of August.

    Default Owde

I did make it to the OWDE, and what a great time! I know it's been a while, and I forgot to update this.

My wife and I had an awesome weekend!

The car ran perfectly. I got to scrub-in some new tires. What an experience to drive an actual race car on a track!

I've done many a DE event, but an open-wheel car is a different animal completely.

Nick G. took some photos of the event:

I was the only one that brought my own car. I guess I jumped right in with both feet LOL!

Our trailer doubled as our camper for the weekend, and worked very well.
