Wanted To Buy Looking for simple data acq system

We're looking to put a simple data acquisition system into a Club Ford, primarily for driver development. I haven't found an inexpensive solution that has external inputs (not just accelerometer and GPS).

    We'll want inputs for:
    - Wheel speed
    - Engine RPM
    - Throttle position
    - Steering angle
    - Brake pressure

Accelerometer is also needed, and GPS is desired but not required.

Anyone have anything used to sell or suggestions for new systems that are significantly less expensive than AIM stuff?

    Thanks,
    Phil

You might want to look for systems from Race Technology or Autosport Labs.

Default Data Acquisition & Inexpenside -> Mutually Exclusive Terms

Race Technology and Autosport Labs are both great systems. I have the RT and very pleased. That said, you'll quickly find the "sensor suite" is the cost benefit trade space. There may be some Arduino tools out there to DIY a solution, but again, the sensors are the same cost.
The RT DL-1 Club is pretty much One Boat Buck ($1000). But post session gives a lot of information to build driver skill without the additional sensors. IMU and GPS paired with some video you are at a great position to then move on. Just my opinion. You mileage may vary.

Best of luck in your quest!

    Cheers Jim

Phil, I had a Racepak G2X in my Club Ford. Worth a look if you can find a used unit.

I've been on the look-out for something similar RF81. I've been running HLT on my Iphone with a stand alone 10 Hz GPS. Better than nothing but less than ideal. There are certainly used systems that come up occasionally but you need to be careful of older systems with impossible to install, or impossible to obtain license key proprietary software systems. You end up with a fancy dash but no means of extracting the data.

You want GPS. It makes everything easier and way more detailed.

I would say to save up and go with a new AiM system. They have the best support and the software is really what you are buying. Look at the MXm if you want a simple system that takes 4 sensors (plus the wheel speed) straight to it and then you can add 4 more if you want to later. That starts out at $1300. It will also give you future integration with video if you want it.

I use the RT system, have been since I first built my P2 (DSR at the time). We've been using AIM systems in our ITB 924.

I'd recommend the AIM over the RT - and yes, GPS a must. While ultimately I think the RT system is more powerful, the AIM system is much more noob-user-friendly, quicker to get set up and get results from.

Also, for reference, we got almost 18 years of service out of our original AIM MyChron3 dash in the 924; finallty kicked the bucket this past year and upgraded to an MXM. GPS and wifi connectivity fixed the two big complaints with the old unit - beacon chasing and trying to get USB drivers to work...

    Default Dumb thought

I have a Garmin cycling computer. these things are not all that expensive.

Has anyone ever tried setting one of these computers up on a race car?

The one I have uses GPS to track my course and speed.. It would be interesting to see what it would show for a pal around a race track. It will give lap time if you setup the lap distance.

Default Low Bux data logger - is $30 too much to start?

It may not give you everything you want but a smartphone based app can give you a surprising amount of data, especially if you use the smartphone camera to overlay data on the video. A higher rate gps antenna might be desirable because most smartphones are usually 10HZ sampling rate.

Early days of HPDE track days, I used Harry's lap timer on my iphone. Later editions were upgraded to include more features including video with data overlay. There's a large community that has driven a lot of improvements.
