    Default Hewland questions

    Does anyone know what the drawbolt actually does?? I have heard of people
    running without this.

    Also, I am rebuilding side plates and finding them not wanting to come apart.
    I am applying heat, but maybe need to stick these in the oven, and get them
    up to a uniform 250-300 to get them to release without pressing?? Anyone have
    any tips for this operation?(disassembly)
    Box is MK5 Hewland.

    Draw bolt holds the layshaft, coupler and clutch shaft assembly together. Do NOT run without it. Also, don't tighten it up all the way. Lightly tighten then back off 1/2 to 1 full turn before installing the cotterpin.

    Are you having a hard time removing the output bearings from the side plates?

    Hi, is it an older MK5 or 6 that has roller bearing on the end of diff rather than the MK8 or 9 that has taper bearings? If so you have to heat the side plates so that the alloy expands and the bearing can be pulled from within the casing. i.e. when the do come of the complete bearing remains on the diff. Also start on the side where the diff is held in by the pinion. The MK8/9s are on taper bearings so that the side plates will just pull off as the outer diff bearing will just seperate. All this excludes whatever gunk has been used for gasket seal.

    The early side plates are a PITA

    Scott Young Enterprises can sell you taper roller bearings to replace the ball bearings on the diff. Do it!

    As already noted, the early side plates (or more precisely the older diff ball bearings) are a PITA. Going to taper roller bearings makes assembly and disassembly of the side-plates sooooo much easier. You'll have to then check and adjust pre-load on the diff and and the left-to right diff location for lash by moving shims. But having the replacement taper bearings make that necessary process sooooo much easier.

    Anybody had an issue where the drawbolt thread size is slightly larger than the clutch shaft and won't thread in?

    Try a fine wire brush or sandpaper to make sure there are no burrs.

    Does anyone know if Williams Racing Developments is still in business in Mooresville NC servicing Hewland gearboxes?
    Someone said they may have closed the shop?

    they had a "going out of business" sale last year (or maybe longer ago?), so I presume yes
