Default salvageable spare or future sculpture base?

I just replaced all the CV joints on the Swift, so I have this one, that came off the left rear. All the others are obviously "late for changing", but I was wondering if this one is salvageable. Any thoughts?

The only thing you can actually feel is the pit in the ball. Everything else is smooth to the touch.

Check the cage for cracks. After a crash that seems to be the weakest part.

It wasn't the impact side, and I looked before, but I'll check again.

Did you happen to check for slop in the axle before removing from the car? I like to do the shake test by grabbing the axle near the end and giving a good shake. Any significant radial movement suggests a worn CV.

Didn't think to do that, but they seemed pretty snug.

Do yourself a favor and just pitch it! Otherwise, you'll carry that nasty thing around with you until you sell the car.

I have used worse. I would polish the races with the dremel, check the cage for cracks as previously suggested, polish the cage "windows" a little as well, and use it.

While these are precision machined pieces, its not like they require the precise fit you'd need between the rod and the crank bearings . They will work just fine for quite a while with some slop and only one pit on one ball - hey, there's a chance you'll wipe a corner off before the joint deteriorates any further....

    Just my two cents.

    cheers,
    BT

are you ever likely to replace a cv at the track? If not, why hold onto it?

I agree with the above 2 posts - it'll make a very acceptable spare.

Clearly the part is serviceable. To me, the question is ..... what other spares do you have?

If you have 4 new spares ..... then scrap it or donate to someone without a spare.
It is generally a really bad weekend if you need more than 2 spare CVs at the track

If you decide to keep it as a spare, measure the diameter of the damaged ball and see if you have a matching replacement in one of the other joints you've removed.

When measuring CV balls, differences in the 1/10 of a thousandth (0.0001") range make a big difference in tightness.

    John,

I have never had to replace a CV joint at the track, but then, I know the mechanical talents of the guy who just replaced 4 on my car, so now the risk seems a bit higher. [The four new ones are on the car now, and this would be my only spare.] I guess the question is, how do I lose one CV and not need two, or at least more parts to continue the weekend. It seems a CV failure would likely be dramatic, but I don't know. Never replaced one for any reason, except for this crash-damage

I'll polish it and pack it in the trailer, if for no other reason than the race-truism that the part that breaks will not be the part for which you have a spare.

    Thanks for the input everyone.
