    Default hewland Mk questions

Having trouble getting the clutch to work on my Lola 340. pulled the transaxle out (4th time!) and pulled the throw out cross shaft out. I thought it had bronze bushing but the large side had plastic. I have the bushing kit and getting the lever side (20mm) ouy was easy. two questions:

    1. How do you get the small side bushing out of the case? I noticed the shaft has some play in it and one came with the kit so I figure I should replace it.

    2. While in there I noticed the input shaft seal was ugly and a trail of oil down the inside of the bell housing. How in the heck do you get that seal out to replace it?

besides all the slop in the shaft due to worn bushings, I also noticed that the fingers look slightly (1 or 2 degrees) bent at the base where they are welded to the cross shaft, so I am ordering a new cross shaft as well.

    thanks in advance for advice.

    Kip,

The small side cross shaft bushings I have seen have a split in them and can be "collapsed" with a punch and hammer to remove them.

The gearbox input shaft seal is removed with a seal removal tool. A $10 item at Harbor Freight.

I would recommended you have the fingers on the new cross shaft TIG welded before you install it. I have seen the factory welds break which usually means the end of your race weekend.

    Cheers, Joe

    Default Thanks Joe

I'll give that a shot over the weekend.
