    Default Flanged Bolt Diameter Issue

I'm looking for some flanged bolts, doesn't matter if it's hex, Allen, or 12 point. The problem is all the flanged diameters for the 1/4-28 bolts I've seen are too large. They are either .515" or .573ish" diameter. I need something that will be <.495" which is what the existing ones I'm replacing are. Any ideas where to look? So far I've tried McMaster, Fastenal, Bolt Depot, Aircraft Spruce, and some others.

    Thanks for the advice!
    Jim

    Default Try McMaster Again

    Hi Jim,

McMaster has several options with a head flange less than a 1/2" in diameter.

    3/8" Dia. Example: https://www.mcmaster.com/91271A572/

I'm sure ARP has something that will work too... but the price will be high.

If those 12pt bolts aren't flanged enough for your application try these guys.

Awesome hardware store with a pretty substantial fastener selection. I'd never been on their website. Frankly, I'm surprised they have one. I don't think they do e-commerce business.

I pass by one of their stores about once a week. If they have what you want but won't ship it, I'll swing by and pick it up for you. Shoot me a PM.

If I could only get the diameters you referenced, but needed them smaller, I'd just chuck them in my lathe and machine the OD down to what I wanted. However, I assume from your query that you don't have a lathe.

    Hi Craig,
Thanks very much for the info.
ARP's bolts all have big flanges.
And then ironically, that McMaster bolt has a pretty small flange.

Thanks Daryl. That's very kind of you. I'll give them a call if I can't find the right stuff elsewhere.

    Hi Dave,
I might be able to find a friend with one. The best I could do here in my garage is chuck a bolt up in the drill press and hold a file to it. Not exactly Mercedes F1 standards of machining. :-)

However, if you bolt a HSS toolbit into your drill press vise, you might be able to do this type of lathe work...

I would not bother with the file or tool bit. Just go for the 4.5" or 5" grinder while turning in the drill press. Or if you have a belt sander, put your bolt in a hand drill.
