    Default FS future

I just finished reading the FS rule in the latest GCR and i have some questions to ask and some comments too

    1. Is there an over-all single performance target that will be used to set the performance level for every type of car?

    2. Is the intent to have the lap times for FS to be based on a single type of car such as the FM?

    3. Will the races be run what you brung with multiple races within the race

Frankly i like the concept but it might be very difficult to manage!

Any info about the class is appreciated!
    Thanks ... Jay Novak

You keep doing this. Are you referring to FS or FX?

    Jay,

It is #3 on your list!

FS and FX are basically "run what you brung" classes.
FS is for regional races only!
FX is a catch-all formula class for Major races.

No attempt to balance in either one.

In FX in Majors it might be said if a group (say FM) could document that over a period of "x" years they had a sufficient average of cars entered in FX at Majors to be a Runoffs class, they then could present that data. IMHO not likely.

The one slight tweak that I would make to PF's comment is that FX is more of a "run what class you brung" affair. As I read the FX rules, cars have to conform to one of its included classes (FM, F4, USF2000 etc.). By contrast, FS is truly a run-what-you-brung class, within some very wide parameters.

BTW, FS is a fantastic class. Truly just for fun. No attempt to equalize cars at all. As long as your formula car fits SCCA's safety rules (and the car doesn't fit in any other class), it can run in FS. No homologation, no hassles. No worries about meeting Runoffs criteria, etc.

I guess there may be a rule about no turbos in SCCA? I think I read that, across the board. Maybe I'm wrong. Someone can correct me.

Oh, and you must weigh at least 750 lb. :-)

The only downside is when there is a National/Majors race at your home track, you can't play.

Sounds like the perfect place to run a Lola Indy Lights car with a V8 engine instead of the original V6.

I thought there was a weight limit to FS, specifically to keep Indy cars out, although I suppose F1 and Lights might make it under.

A few years back there was a 1st gen March Lights with a 350 for sale out here on the west coast.

I had that thought, as well, but the current GCR specifies only a minimum (750lb). The oldest GCR that I have is 2009, and it, too, specifies only the minimum.

We may be conflating FS with ASR, a similar catch-all odds-and-ends class, which does specify maximum weight.

Default Not really an important note, I'm just wondering...

So, does this interest in FS (by HQ) mean they would consider opening ASR up to former-non-Spec/Spec Racers? Hmm.

Or, do I cut the fenders off the old SR Renault and run it as an FS? Maybe it should be re-bodied as an FS and then alternate between SPU and FS. Make for a busy weekend.

    Cheers - Jim

I seem to remember a turboed FM with a rear wing that moved with the brake pedal running a regional at Road Atlanta a few years ago. Great stuff.

In the early days Formula Super did not allow bigger cars. I forget what the cut off was (1,500 lb?), but that requirement went away after the very first few years.

Yes, but it was (or maybe would be now), illegal. Moveable aerodynamic devices are not allowed.

That is from memory. I'm too lazy/busy to look for that actual wording in the GCR.
