Is there more to these things than meets the eye? They are always damn expensive, and it seems like someone with average fabrication skills and a lathe could make them.

is it because they are made of really thin stuff to save weight?

Heck, you could make them out of damaged shocks!

Thanks Joe, but I already have a set of lifts. They’re great (and worth every penny.) What I’m looking for is a set of air jacks (think Indy car pit stops). This car I’m working on has to carry nearly 300 lbs of ballast to make minimum weight. It is, at the same time, a colossal pain in the ass to put in the air. So I though maybe it would be cool to put some air jacks on it and save myself some hassle on test days, etc.

The lifts are very well suited to putting a car on high stands. These would be the equivalent of putting it on low stands while at the track. Just get it off the ground so I can knock the wheels off and do in between session maintenance without having to get the tall stands and air lifts out.

Plus, the cool factor is way high.

I have several tops and pistons but only one housing and foot. Pretty sure they are Dallara Indycar a couple of generations ago.
If you want them, they can be yours, cheap.

depends how much weight you need each jack to hold. according to the airjax site, 120psi would be enough for a 4 jack system on big formula cars. could probably get away with 100psi on a light formula. seems relatively linear, i.e. triple the air pressure for 3x weight (force is just pressure x area).

You can easily calculate it from the piston area and the weight it will have to support.

However, to keep the car rock solid once jacked up, the pressure needs to be maybe 2-3 times than necessary just to raise the car - air is compressible, after all, and any increase in weight above what that pressure and piston area will counterbalance will make the car sink some.
