I'm not a Fiona Apple fan, but she released an album produced at home on Garage Band.
She titled the album with the hook line she lifted from "The X Files". "Fetch me the bolt cutters."

Sometimes you can get the image from just the title of the song...
Sounds Of Silence.
Darkness on the Edge of Town
Heart of the Sunrise
etc....

Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white.
But we decide which is right.
And which is an illusion???"

PS - second best line
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send
I've gone crazy on this road ... with all of this travellin alone
But the asphalt is burnin' tonight ...

"Walking on the edge of rage and understanding
Between the black and the white
This child is so angry
Alone here tonight"
She [and Kevin] get a lot said in this short burst. Every adolescent can probably relate

These lyrics fit the theme - but the whole album is full of pull quotes. The Who's answer to Catcher in the Rye - Quadrophenia.
Tommy was first, but this might be better.....
5:15
Girls of fifteen
Sexually knowing
The ushers are sniffing
Eau de Cologning
The seats are seductive
Celibate sitting
Pretty girls digging
Prettier women
Magically bored on a quiet street corner
Free frustration in our minds and our toes
Quiet storm water, m-m-my generation
Uppers and downers, either way blood flows

"My love is vengeance, it's never free." [The Who; behind blue eyes]
I always found The Who to be very negative, angry, sad. Still, some of their lyrics were well written.

I agree - most great lyrics seem to focus on the darker side of life, but:
And like one and one don't make two
One and one make one
And I'm looking for that free ride to me
I'm looking for you
From Bargain - they did a few "love" songs - Townshend was a little more circumspect on his solo stuff.
You could do an entire thread on the lyrics of the Who, Springsteen, Billy Joel, The Beatles, etc - we need to pull some others out of the woodwork....

Speaking of Billy Joel,
"Then she says she wants affection, as she reaches for the blade," [Stiletto]
Heard it on my way home. Yes, anger, sadness, betrayal, frustration are all fonts of fine lyrics.
The thing that impresses me, as a writer, are the guys who can use a dime's worth of words, and get a dollar's worth of emotion / imagery / and/or ambiance in response.

Or, you could say that it's about economy, maximizing the impact by choosing great words. In "I wish you peace," the Eagles [well, Bernie Leadon and Patti Davis], could have said lots of things, but I doubt anyone could communicate the meaning any better than the line "cooling water at the fevers end." That was the perfect analogy, the perfect phrasing

Most of the performers and artists of the 60 and 70's got ripped off so they never saw the money. Just by accident I came across this video and it explains a lot of what went on.

....and then there's what the drag strip announcer says at the end of Steve Miller's "Livin' in the USA" but those words do not appear on any online lyric search.......the end of which is him saying "He takes it!"
....and then I bought Quadrophenia again just the other day because I haven't totally ruined my hearing yet.............

For all of us flower children, (or who believe we are - age is not a requirement.)
The velocity addicts explode on the highways
Ignoring the journey and moving so fast
Their nerves fall apart and they gasp but can't breathe
They run from the cops of the skeleton past
Petrified by tradition in a nightmare they stagger
Into nowhere at all and they look up aghast
And I wave goodbye to speed
And smile hello to a rose

The only one I knew who played this was Jonathan Schwartz on WNEW-FM out of NYC.
He was on from 6 - 10 so I associate this song with the 8pm hour - does not seem to fit at any other time

Odd to see Metallica and Johnny Cash together, but then, I love Sarah Brightman and Enya, but also Emmy Lou Harris's "Pancho and Lefty", "Tulsa Train", and Patsy Cline's "Crazy."
So, from Deep Purple; " Smoke on the Water" is a pretty evocative title [and a great song.]
And Emmy Lou Harris [to branch out from rock for a minute] [Pancho and Lefty] "The deserts quiet and Clevelands cold." and "His horse was fast as polished steel." Great line!

All the Road Running by Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris.
Well if you're inclined
To go up on the wall
It can only be fast and high
And those who don't like the danger
Soon find something different to try
Don't stand
Don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me

Jethro Tull, Skating Away
Well, do you ever get the feeling
That the story's too damn real
And in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage
And it seems like you're the only
Person sitting in the audience?
Yes, Roundabout
Along the drifting cloud
The eagle searching down on the land
Catching the swirling wind
The sailor sees the rim of the land
The eagle's dancing wings
Create as weather spins out of hand

My wife's a David Bowie fan, but I never really got into his music. I like "Fame', but no particularly evocative lyrics there, to my ear. It is all subjective, however, depending on the emotions, memories, and
mental images evoked in the listener, which won't be the same for everyone.].
Here's something from a song I really like. [Tracey Chapman; Smoke and Ashes.]
"Your light and your heat have all been spent
Leaving only smoke and ashes"
There is a lot of fine writing in the lyrics of that song, but this says it so well you hardly need the rest. It's both succinct, and evocative.

This always ran through my mind when buckling in:
"Let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time
You can waste your time on the other rides
This is the nearest to being alive
Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death"
I'm going to go off on a tangent here because I saw this again the other day and it still tears my heart out almost 20 yeas later:

Long Story:
1968. Boomers had so exploded the population of Florida State University that many freshman classes were being held at night.
Cold January night. First meeting of Humanities course being taught by one graduate student; Julian Compton. Class was a mix of everything from sorority girls in mandatory dresses to long haired hippies in bell bottom Levis and buffalo sandals.
Compton introduces himself and immediately instructs the students to write down the name of the musical entertainer that would still be popular in 20 years. He then asks each student to give their answer and their reasoning.
The ensuing discussion eats up a good part of the hour. After the last answer was given, Compton says "You are all wrong." At the front of the room are blackboards that slide back and forth enabling one to be hidden.
With a flourish, Compton slides back the front board with all the students projections; Beatles, Elvis, Beach Boys, Everly Brothers, etc.
On the hidden board, now visible, are two words artfully written in many colors of chalk taking up most the board:
Rolling Stones
Compton quietly exits the room.

excellent point: ever since the song came out, when I was jumping in the car (or Kart) I was singing “I just wanna fly” by Sugar Ray
I will also say that I have a Track Day play list as well.....
@Purple Frog: Spot On.
@Bardahl77 not at all - I watched an interview with Rick Rubin about producing Hurt; one statement sits with me “When Trent sang the song it was good, when Johnny sang it, it was Hopeless”
geez, I could do this all night lol!!

Cool! I think I saw one of these acts as a kid. Like the song, too. And in that vein;
"Speeding down the fast lane, honey, we're playin' from town to town
The boys and I've been burnin' it up, can't seem to slow it down
I've got the pedal to the floor, our lives are runnin' faster
We got our sights set straight ahead, but I ain't sure what we're after"
