Back in the day, FV's used to bump-draft. We even had special reinforced noses and rear push-bars to facilitate it. Even though our speeds were MUCH lower, it was still dicey. At some point, it was banned for similar safety concerns. I don't know for sure if it's still illegal to do it.

There is a picture of Ryan being extracted from the car. His helmet and HANS are off and he has a 4" square bandage on the back of his head. I won't post it here, but it can be found at the New York Post website.

I will not criticize any safety features or protocols that allowed Newman to survive that crash.

I am a cancer survivor. I have a friend who went to the same institution, had many of the same doctors and treatment, but did not survive. Our families have a completely different outlook on the standard of care that was provided.

I choose to celebrate that Newman is alive rather than criticize that he was injured.

It's coincidence somebody above mentioned "Road 2 Recovery". A fine gentleman I went to jr. high and high school with was a couple years younger than I. He was a phenomenal motocross racer. About 25 years ago he crashed and was paralyzed. His path from there to here involved a very successful motorcycle related business and some dabbling in NASCAR Truck series. He's found his calling in working with paralyzed athletes as a Director for Road 2 Recovery. A non-profit that works with paralyzed athletes.

It's a worthwhile organization if anybody is interested in checking them out:

Our medical experience was a polar opposite of yours so just saying I hear you on perspective.

Regardless, genuinely happy for you that it worked out. The opposite is truly horrid, and can be for life.

    Default Great News !

In the news within the last hour (I see from above posts that this is old news...):

Roush Fenway Racing said Newman was showing “great improvement” after his horrific crash Monday night on the final lap of the Daytona 500. Newman is walking around Halifax Medical Center according to the team and his wife Krissie posted a picture of Newman with their two daughters.

I am shocked & amazed at the end result here. Very pleased because while watching the event, which I never seem to watch NASCAR, I thought the worst had just happened. This is an incredible outcome.

While delighted with this positive outcome, actually I'm not at all surprised. I have a theory that the longer a viewer has been around this sport, the more injury we expect when watching crashes.

Though personally hesitating to use my late friend Gordon Smiley as the best example I can think of here, on the fly, I couldn't help but think of him even before Sebastian Bourdais hit the wall at Indy a couple years back. My first thought with Bourdais' was "grave injuries," yet he was nearly unhurt -- despite the accident angle and circumstances appearing as nearly identical to poor Gordon's.

All meaning that I think us older guys who've witnessed terrible things over several decades have points of reference that in the moment forget the tremendous safety advancements made since. This is clearly a great thing, though the flip side is aggressive drivers surely now take bigger risks in knowing they're likely to accrue minimal injuries -- if any at all.

    So. Many. Questions.

Like, how did this go from being extracted by the jaws of life behind black curtains, then in surgery and in critical condition to walking out of the hospital 24 hours later? Why was there such a void of information on his condition while seemingly everyone in NASCAR had been in tears since the end of the race?

    This whole incident is extraordinary.

I don’t know what his injuries were obviously, but I’ve seen racers airlifted out of race tracks with serious concussion only for them to be released days later. Perhaps this was the case? Purely speculation of course.

Well, I'm sure he was complaining of plenty of pain and/or unable to answer questions properly due to disorientation. Also any loss of consciousness has to be treated as a potential major head injury. It's always best to err on the side of caution in treating trauma injuries (remember Mark Donohue). He's definitely gonna be sore for many days and continue to be evaluated for concussion protocols.

Having seen too many wrecks with bad outcomes, I had the same feeling Monday as I did watching Greg Moore, Jeff Krosnoff and Dan Wheldon's crashes. I'm just happy I don't have to put another driver in that sad memory folder.

it's a petty point but what kind of hospital lets you walk out these days? They take you in a wheel chair up to your car. Staged for the cameras?

I was wheeled out after an epidural!

when a friend of mine was in the hospital with serious injuries, I found out that the color of the socks are a signal to the nurse staff. One color is for flight risks, other is fall potential, etc....
