    Default First post, a question.

I have a 1980 Zink. It came with a blown motor, and since I'm a VW guy from way back I'm building a 1915 for it with some stuff I already had. The plan is to autocross it, not sure what else. I'm going through everything and came upon my first little problem.
Who knows a source for 5/8 diameter shift rod universals? I can just convert to 3/4 tubing since those are readily available, but thought I would ask here first.

    Hi Steve,
I assume you have a Z16, which was a formidable Road Race car back in the day. I have Z16s and am happy to help in any way i can. There are several current and former owners here too. Did you get any body molds with your car?

To answer your question, Pegasus is a great resource!

    Supposed to be a Z12B,

Yes, Pegasus has them, but I can get 3/4 for half that price, and I need 3. The originals are pretty light, just wondering if that same thing was still available.
No, no body molds, I am missing some bodywork in the engine area.

I recently redid my shift linkage with new ujoints and it made a huge difference, but, like you mentioned, the ones I ordered looked exactly like what was on the car until they arrived...and were huge and heavy. I used them anyway, but I will be replacing them when I can.

    F.Y.I. There were no Z12-B's. You have a Z12.5 or Z-18, and definitely not a Z-18B.
*note to Gary Guzman* Z-16 was a Formula Ford.

    Not picking a fight...just nit-picking...lol

Z18 sounds right, I have the log books, first entry is 1980, is there a chassis stamp somewhere?

Lord, glad I didn't see that before, I might have been tempted to buy it myself. And then proceed to spend a boatload of money!

    Good luck!

I'd be interested in knowing the names in the log book(s).
    Vee history intrigues me.

    Steve,

Your car looks like a Zink Z-12 and has completely different frame and bodywork compared to my Z-18B. I think
Steve Lathrop previously said in another post that the Z-12 lower frame runs uninterrupted the entire length of
the car like yours. Good luck with it as I've been told they're great cars..

George Fizell won 2 national championships with the Z12 that I campaigned in 1976. Mine was one of 2 that year. Original rear suspension design was awful and it didn't cool well either. George fixed it and was super fast. I believe Steve Oseth owns that car now. I saw it at the FV 50th at RRR.

Default The car is back together

I would say I did a "refresh", not a restore or rebuild. I spent no more money than necessary, and had most of the parts sitting on shelves. Found a few things that might help somebody.

The wheels were powder coated locally, for about $42 each.

I used Wilwood masters left over from the A-Mod car, hopefully the bore sizes will work out okay. I changed the rear brakes to 67 (big) shoes because I only had late style. I haven't had a car with those tiny rear brakes for decades!

All the flex lines are steel braided from CB Performance, stock lengths, and the connections are now the stock VW clips. Originally, the car had VW (bubble) hard lines, an adapter, AN flex line, another adapter. Now it's all VW.

The clutch master is Datsun pickup. The slave is some no name thing.
No picture, but in cleaning up the steering bellcranks, I found one of them was bound up axially, and I had to put a thin washer between the spacer block and cap.

I'm frugal, but I'm also a belt and suspenders type, so I added a grub screw to the steering coupler in addition to the roll pins. The U-joint is from a Polaris Ranger because it was free. Haven't welded it on yet.
I won't mention the engine stuff unless someone wants it, it's probably 120 hp. 7000 rpm rev limit.
I lost the gas cap, or never had it. A local place can get those tiny caps for you.
    Hope someone finds this useful.

Good evening. I ended up bartering my way into this FV. Do you have any additional information or documentation for what has been done to it? I don’t think it’s been on track since you sold it. It appears that the only thing that has changed is it has a 1600 single port engine in it and it’s sporting a brand new set of rims and Hoosiers tires. The rims and tires you had powder coated came with it as well. I’m trying to decide what I’m going to do with it. Race it, sell it, trade it, street car it (haha)…Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you Maxmillian

These are fine cars and would still be competitive with today's Formula Vees. I hope this sees the race track again!

With a 1200 engine this car could run in the NW as a vintage fv in Sovren(website Sovren racing) or SCCA majors in Seattle and Portland. In the right hands this car could run in the front in SCCA or you could have a lot of fun in the less intense vintage group. I had a Z18,very similar and still run SCCA fv and Sovren FF. PM me if you want further info.
