    Default Vintage Hoosier Tire PSI

We switched this year to the vintage Hoosier tire for our Formula Ford. What is your target tire pressure when the tires are hot?

And, what pressures do you actually see after a session?

We have been shooting for 20 PSI but are struggling to get there. (I would like to think it's because I'm such a smooth driver but we know that's not the case.)

    Thanks in advance.

I have set my car up two ways.
One, 13lbs all around, knowing it will go up 2-3 lbs.
And 12lbs-F, 14lbs-R with the same expected results.
15ish lbs, hot, seems to be my best tire wear and temp range with maybe 1/2 to 1 degree of neg camber.

I love these tires, they seem to wear forever and never get tired until you scrap off all the tread.

Alan, thanks for the input. So, you are looking for 15 PSI hot?

    By the way, nice Lola!

    Default info from Hoosier

I'm new to these VFF tires...so asked my dealer about suggested pressures. He contacted the home office and got this in reply:

Good Morning. Recommend the following setup with these tires.

    Item 44165 – 135/545-13 VFF

    Item 44175 – 165/580-13 VFF

    Cold – 14 -15 psi

    Hot – 19 – 21 psi

No more than -2.0 degrees of camber in the front and -1.0 in the rear.

Don't know anymore than what I was told... I intend to use as a starting point on my 340 Lola, along with the original Lola setup data (circa 1974). S
ure others have fine tuned further... just passing this along as another bit of data.

So, your getting lots of advice and the only one that seems way of to my experience is the Hoosier recommendation. We shoot for 16-18 hot. Todd

    Default Mounting Orientation

Switching over from Dunlops to Hoosiers. Is there a mounting orientation for the VFF tires? Stencils in or out? Both axles or just one?

    Thanks.

I always have to check the Hoosier website to remember for sure about tire orientation. If I remember from a month ago, the serial number stamp in inside on all 4 tires

I'm certainly not a 'front runner' but I agree with Tstrong; I find the 'factory recommended' pressures too high, especially the rear. Anything over 15 hot on the rear and my car oversteers.
I ran the tires in the rain yesterday (a lot of rain, this is BC wet coast) and found them much to my liking. Not as good as floods for sure but a good intermediate!

I found that lower PSI, like 17-18, works better than 19 or higher. At Indy it was hot, sunny and 88 degrees. At 19 or more PSI hot they seemed greesy.

After the input on this post from others I'm thinking 14/15 or at the most 15/16 cold to start.

It's a miracle! I remembered correctly! From the Hoosier website:
ROAD RACING TIRES: (Includes catalog numbers beginning with 43, 44, 45, 46)
In most cases, Hoosier tires used in Road Race applications should be mounted with the serial code toward the center of the vehicle. Once a tire has been run in the proper orientation it is acceptable to remount the tire in the opposite direction to even out the wear.

My experience is the Hoosiers work best at 16 PSI hot. The Dunlop's and Avons like 19 PSI hot.

I also found the Hoosiers needed a little less static camber.

    Cheers, Joe

Excited to find this string. Instead of remounting the tires, can’t a person just swap the front left to right, and front right to left? Same in the rear? And I have ran Hoosiers 2 years now, 13/15 (f/r) to 14/16 cold has been a good place to start for my feel. I haven’t tried the same pressure front to rear, curious to how that would feel.

That wouldn't 'even out the wear', I believe you have to reverse the tire on the rim.

Anyone else having a vibration problem with the fronts?
Under hard braking they can get a bounce going

No problems with my VFF's, I really like the tire it wears well; I've done several races with them in the dry and found they still worked in the wet!
