Default Watercooled VW adapter to Porshe 914 gearbox

Hi group , is there a way to bolt a FSV style VW water cooled engine to a 914 transaxle ? I have an adapter to bolt it to a Hewland but of course the bolt spacing is slightly off for the 914 box or an un-flipped VW based case. Did FSV ever use both un-flipped cases and water cooled engines at the same time ? Anyone have a spare adapter if they exist ?

not sure but do not think that the water pumper and unflipped box was used.

Steve's correct - with the water-cooled motors they flipped the box just like a FF.

I'll have to look. I have an adapter for a water cooled motor to a hewland, but I don't know if its for a flipped or unflipped configuration. I do recall that some guys wanted to convert their ACs to WCs, and perhaps for structural reasons you might want to leave the box as it was when AC.

I don't have a WC motor laying around, so if you can provide a sketch with the size and distance of the fasteners referenced to "up" I can compare to a VW case I have.

Or send me a pic of your adapter with "up" indicated.

Please excuse my ignorance, but how does it matter if the transmission is flipped or not? Same bolt pattern and centerline, which should give 4 potential orientations. Those bellhousings become irregular/egg/oval shaped with use, so if your bolt pattern does not work, perhaps you need to massage the case and make it regular again.

    Try:

    https://www.kennedyeng.com/engine-adapters

They adapt to the 914 - just pick an engine (they have the 1.6 on the 4-cyl list)

I always thought they were symetrical as well but they are not. Top two are about 7 3/4 in. apart, bottom two about 8 1/2 in. apart. I don't have a metric tape measure handy but that's within a couple of mm accuracy. Close but about 3/4 in. difference. so you can't just flip without an adapter.

No doubt they can do it but the cost is generally up there for their parts. Very nice parts but from what I have seen not cheap. I am hoping someone has a used one gathering dust.

VW actually made a drawing for the adapter to mate a water cooled engine to the Hewland box. I have a copy of that drawing. I used it to make the adapter for the Honda Fit to the same transmission.
