    Default Saving Money

I'm not good at doing polls on Apexspeed, besides I want to read the actual opinions behind the vote...

    I pose this question.

Concerning rules governing the Kent engine:

There are valves on the market today that are the same specs as the ones required in the GCR.
But... these valves are 20% of the cost of the "legal" ones.

Would you be for or against a rules change to allow them?

or... would you just use them and stay quiet; not bothering to go through the 2 year SCCA change order process (knowing you aren't going to the Runoffs and even if you did the chances of being torn down are about 0? (the Devil made me ask that.)

Honestly, I think I save far more by having a pro built motor. If I do the maintenance, they last several years with a few headgaskets in between so I can clean up the valves.

I'd be in favor of being able to buy equal (i.e. EQUAL) parts for 20% of current part cost! Not sure if my engines have needed valves in the past.

All for it. Especially for the type of racing I do. If I was making BIG bucks racing then maybe you would need to follow the rules to every little piece but to keep the sport alive I feel there should be some leeway but within reason though. Was every valve stuck into the Kent motor at Ford built by the same supplier, doubt it. That is just my 2c worth.

    Default valves

Sure, come up with this now after I had to replace all the valves on a head refresh over the winter. How do I get a refund?

Perhaps, in order to receive informed opinions, someone should provide price and availability. My opinion may change if a valve costs $30, or if it costs $130. If you can buy intake valves for $22 and exhaust valves for $34, and they are readily available, then a rule change seems unnecessary.

    OK, Got it.
Saving ~$150 on valves isn't a big deal.
Besides, how often are valves even changed?

Just trying to get the viewpoints of those involved.
Sounds like this isn't an issue worth chasing.
I'll take that back to the source.
    Thanks again.

Exactly. It really is in the spirit of the class. I certainly want the best I can afford and even if I save $80 on a rebuild, it'll help me buy the next tow rig fuel stop or maybe save for that forged crank!

    Default valves

The last time someone told me he had some less expensive valves that didn't make any more power I was looking at his head with a set of Manley valves. I did not buy his argument. There have also had some valves some stock looking valves out there which wouldn't last through a few dyno pulls. If the valves are really the stock profile and consistent in manufacturing put them out there.

If they were really identical, including mass, and cost less, and could be tracked for compliance the same as the stock valves, then sure, where is the downside?

Known reliability counts for a lot with me. I'll pay extra for it. If a new valve comes on the market and it's purported to be cheaper, my first question is about the spec but the second question is how reliable will it be. So even if one did come up, I'd be hesitant to put it in.
