Default Swirl Pot, How does it work?

My swirl pot has two chambers that empty into the oil tank. How exactly does it work?

Im not sure what the benefits are of this system as shown below? I’d understand if it was integrated with the cooling system but as is what can it do?

A swirl pot - regardless of whether it is for oil or water - if designed correctly will separate out most, if not all, air bubbles from the liquid before it get to the tank proper. In the oils system in particular, is is bad to pump a lot of foamy oil back into the engine - bearings really do not like to be lubricated by air entrained in oil.
