Default FV Vintage fan belt question:

When I first started racing Nationals in V, we were allowed to gut the generator and were required to "start with a belt on the engine. At some point during the race, belts could be found around the track. These were skinny console sewing machine belts if I remember right. What do the vintage vees use now? A stock belt with a shimmed out gen pulley or do they run "skinny" sewing machine belts?

I'm running a shimmed stock/OEM Continental belt, with a non-gutted stock12v generator and functioning voltage regulator in VSCDA Vintage FV. I've never thrown a belt or lost a belt while racing Vintage FV.

    Electrical System
    1. Fitting of any standard VW distributor [or replica; seeparagraph II.B. on page 3].
    2. The fan belt may run at any desired tension.
    3. Either a 6 volt or 12 volt electrical system may be used. The generator, armature, brushes, and voltage regulatormust all be in place and functioning. Nothing must be doneto interfere with the normal battery charging function ofthe generator.

And if you "throw" the belt, you'll cook the motor as the fan is the only cooling over the heads.
Best yet, here are the rules we currently use in VSCDA Fomula Vee:

    Default Vintage FV fan belts

There are as many opinions on fan belts an generators as there are FV drivers. There are many ways to adjust tension in the belt and pulley system including belt length. Most are running 6v generator with a12 V regulator. The 6V generator is a bit incorrect as it will easily generate 12v at race RPM - just not at idle. Alignment is the key to avoid thrown belts - not tension.
