[ Hilton Head Residents take home Both Titles

From pawleys island, Sc. 10/8/18- The Southern Formula car championship ended in spectacular fashion this weekend with both the F1600 and F2000 championship titles being won by residents from Hilton Head, South Carolina. The series entered the final event of the year at the Roebling Road circuit just outside of Savannah, Georgia. In the 1600 class Doug Stewart started the weekend 8 points behind the leader John Schimenti and Doug Stewart did exactly what he needed to do by finishing 2nd in the race and he was blessed with a little good fortune when Schimenti retired from the race on lap 12 which gave Steward a 2 point advantage to win the title. John Schimenti was very gracious afterwards congratulating Stewart. Schimenti took 2nd in the title and the consistent driver Roelof Blok finished in the 3rd points position. John Robinson captured the pole for the race and he took home the win after Jonathan Lee had a very big crash that took him out early in the race. Jim Lee had an impressive 3rd podium spot which insured Doug Stewart the championship. This was a storybook ending to a year long battle.
The F2000 championship was another exciting race. Marc Stern, another Hilton Head Resident had a very impressive weekend to cap off his year long points battle to take the Title over Jim Belay 2nd and Skip Weld in 3rd spot. Marc captured the pole position for the race and never gave up the lead. It wasn't easy for him as John Herscher and Fletcher Wullf were right on him most of the race. Herscher had a late spin which dropped him to 3rd spot and Fletcher Wullf ended up with 2nd place in the race. Skip Weld and Jim Belay ended up 4th and 5th. Jim Belay came into the weekend in 2nd place in points and he needed Stern to have a bad race to be able to capture the title and that just wasn't happening as Marc had a flawless performance and he was a very deserving champion. Congratulations to both champions as the season long hard work paid off for them. Who would of thought of the 40 drivers that competed in the Southern Formula car championship this year that both champions live in Hilton Head ,South Carolina. Must be something in the air.
Now that 2018 is finished we will start to look to the 2019 schedule. Proposed schedules have been released so keep tuned to the series website( www.southernformulacar.com) for the latest information about next year. Congratulations to F1600 champion Doug Stewart and F2000 champion Marc Stern. all results and points totals will be posted on website this week.
