    Default Wider wheels??

Since I am not competing as much as I drive for fun I am getting sticky wider tires. It looks like I will need 8x13 rims. My research hasn't turned up much with a 4x100 bolt pattern that wide. Are the Bassett steel wheels my only option?

Depending on the necessary offset for your application, the Honda and Miata guys run 13x7 to 13x10 wheels. You might want to figure out the offset you need and look on some of the forums where the Miata and Civic guys play.

Suggest you check the mounting flange inner diameter. It's a tight fit and I had to turn down the diameter.
you need someone with a large lathe or mill and rotary table.
A single carb 1600 vw won't need more than a soft set of FF tires

Thanks for the heads up on the flange size. I agree that I may only need soft FF tires but soft take offs aren't that available and a new tire is about $220 each so that is close to $900 for tires. Wider soft takeoffs about $100 a set season and new rims $73 each.

In my searching I haven't seen any 6x13 R25 tires.

Somehow missed this last year. I like the car and the concept of racing a much lighter more compact setup. A rocker stud failed on me late in season so I am getting a "race" engine built by a local talented builder Kurt Metzger. Should be around 180 hp and working on a custom gear box for both small setup with a 1 - 2 shift topping out about 60 mph. Then using 3rd and 4th positions to get into upper 70's, a tall 3rd in 4th's position and then be able to down shift into 3rd's position for the 25 to 45 mph range. Essentially two 2nd gears. I will short shift from 1st to 3rd's position on big courses like Pocono so I am never needing to go across the gate 3rd to 2nd at 50 something mph while turning. I always struggled with that in my prior car. I know very unconventional but it is the setup I want.

Just thinking here. With that "excess HP" there has to be some torque in there too.

For wider sticky tires - maybe go to 15 inch rims? You could do Wide-5s and custom make the 4x100 if you can't find one. Heaps of 15 slicks to pick from used (good/very good/+).
With the 15s you'll still be pretty close to the same diameters and if weights are close, the inertial losses small-ish.

Just saying out loud as I'm thinking that might be one of my options after some HP increase.

    I like NA too.

    Cheers - Jim
