Very difficult to follow testing pace as timing cannot differentiate between cars with the same numbers (but in different classes) and of course, the huge mixed test groups.

Holden was the early pace-setter doing 44s. Payne was fastest on Saturday in the 45s. Kautz, Ketchie, Benson and Brumbaugh were the pace-setters on Sunday. High 45s, 46s and 47s were better times on Sunday, with most other FFs in the 48 range.

The kent cars were going well (Ketchie, Benson and Brumbaugh).

Sorry if I missed anyone who should be noted. Very tough to follow and published SCCA times are quite humorous. I was very busy on Friday with loading in with 95 degree heat.

Sounds like the track configuration is slightly different from the one SVRA used during the OWWC.

Yes. An extra loop towards the back of the grandstands instead of the turn 5-6 chicane. Looked like it should be fun.

Yes .. the outlap is a LONG one.. about 2 1/2 minutes off the specified 18 minute session time. Then drop a BFA at about 7 1/2 minutes .. and your session is DONE. Takes some FIVE minutes to clear the track... five or 8 more to clear the incident. They did let cars back out at the end, but NO ONE got a full timed lap at speed after the BFA. **AND** the BFA was for a car sitting along the pit wall (trackside, yes). but not moving and well away from any issues at T1... as far as I could tell - mostly from what the audio was saying since there is no video of that section of the track.
I'm sure it won't be the last time this happens. I remember THREE timed laps for FF in one of the Daytona sessions in 2015.

According to SCCA, there will be live stream of all races ... check the standard SCCA/Runoffs page on race days for the link.

FF and F500 have been split for the final day of qualifying. 10 minute sessions each. Probably for the better, even though the session is shorter. The sessions this week, especially the out-laps, have been very hairy with the mixed grouping.

I would not call it a secret, but being fast is the key. If you have the speed, then it is much easier to get it done with very limited opportunity. Fortunately, with 4 days of dry weather, the grid will be very indicative of the true picture. Looks to be a great race. Atleast 5 club guys, and the 5 Pro guys all have a real good shot!

    Default Awesome race

The pro-series has brought really top-notch competition to the FF grid, and they put on a great show. Super, clean, competitive racing. Hopefully, it will be picked for the CBS broadcast.
A shout out to Jon Swanson for making the show! Anyone know what happened to Ketchie, and Jon, and Benson, etc.? Derek's car looked a mess, but they never showed what happened. They said he was okay, which is the most important thing, but he did a number on the wall, I'd guess.

From what I saw, and where people were on track at the moment of Ketchie's incident, I THINK he ended up tangled with Rick Payne, who went out almost immediately afterward. When it happened, they would have been very close together on track.

It wasn't a kind day to my fellow SCCBC club members at the Runoffs: Rick was out by lap 5, Cheri Storms in B-Spec was punted by someone having an over the track limits, snap back across the track moment, and Andrei Kisel was out of T3 in the same session (although I don't know why).

    Default Congrats Formula F

Those last few laps were awesome, the situational awareness was top notch from the Pelfrey/K-Hill cars.

Also seeing Rick Payne make everyone look silly at the start by going from 9th to 2nd before turn one was something else, too bad he wasn't able to finish... What happened to Kautz?

Very good race. Certainly the toughest FF field in memory. So ironic, that so many of the club racers claim to be afraid of running with the "Pro" kids, but the 6 youngsters from the FRP Series all kept it together to finish in the top 8, (with 2 other FRP part-timers) while the SCCA club racers crashed and bashed into early retirement.

That was a great race! Huge props to the drivers and to the track safety crews for keeping it green for so many laps. I was skeptical, but this venue is far better than I imagined from a logistical and organizational standpoint. Wish there was more time on the oval, but there was still a lot of action within the FF race.

If you mean Jon Swanson, I'll take heat for that.

He and I had a good race going, swapping back and forth as each of us got in the middle of the Kevin Brumbaugh/Lawrence Bangert battle. We gave room to each other, were respectful, lots of three-wide and even 4-wide once down the front straight into turn one.

On the last lap I got a run on Swanson on the short straight between turns 12/13 when he got held up at apex of 12 by Brumbaugh/Bangert. We went side-by-side into turn 13 and my car chattered across the curbing and into Swanson. We contacted rear tires, which bounced him up in the air and he broke his left front upright when it came down on my right front. He was not able to continue and I was.

I feel bad. We had a good clean race going, and the contact cost him driving under the checker/finishing. Not the way I want a position, especially since we had been close but clean the entire race.

    Jon,
Bummer it happened that way. Too bad we never got to see any of the battles in the back, as the lead pack kept the cameras on them. This may be a plus for FF overall however, as maybe CBS will give us some air-time and maybe attract some new people, but I didn't really get to see any of the multiple people I know who were running. Maybe someone can post some in-car so we can see the 'races within the race'.

I'll post my in car journey from 2nd to 15th to 4th on YouTube when we get home. It was a very competitive week. It was a dogfight up front, and the expected attrition followed.

I didn't make the Monday session because of a stubborn wheel nut and resulting stub axle carnage, so my loss is the board's gain and I actually got pictures of most of the field. (Cars No. 32/42/70 and myself - No. 171- didn't go out but I was able to fill in my picture and No. 32 from my GF's pictures.)

So... (Most of) the 2017 SCCA Runoffs Formula F field, in order of finish.

What about the first couple? GREAT demonstration of giving each other "racing room" but no quarter.

Glad you were able to finish with only one position lost in that incident.

    Bob,
How in the world did you get that rotating camera view? Do you actually have a PTZ camera mounted? The 'rolling shutter' issue seems to be related to a NON-solid mount to the roll bar, but considering the additional views it's worth it! You can't have PTZ without SOME freedom of movement... but WHO is controlling that camera? Are YOU doing that in addition to DRIVING the car?? Have 2 way control from someone in the paddock? Just how does that work?
Inquiring minds want to know .
BTW.. I agree with Tim .. GREAT driving and 'making room' where there is none.

After starting P15, I had a great battle with Brandon Lavender, David Livingston and Mike Sauce. It was close racing, a couple three-wides, and tough battling but it was great driving with these guys. It reminded me of the lead battle, but just a bit further back on the track! Thanks for the great time!

....... even available at Walmart for under $200.

Brandon Good job. I know I had much fun. The 4 wide in to turn #1 was great and yes everyone was respectful of each other. I am liking the Honda as this was my first race with one. The car had not even turned a wheel until INDY let alone I have not raced much in 5 years. I was really rusty but I enjoyed it. I forgot how much fun I used to have.
