Okay - Day one of qualifying in the book - Mike still on top but because he is fastest in Section 1 - I thought section 3 would be the most important with the draft to the line.

Does he think he can break the draft and get away?

Are 3 guys smart enough to tow up with him and not fight?

    Is he sandbagging.

Is everyone else sandbagging to fake him out?

    Who knows? The Shadow knows!

More reports please! How is the track working out? Looks like FV is faster than a lot of other classes this time out.

    1) In past Runoffs Varacins has always liked to draft the traffic. You are drafting by slower cars not towing around with equal cars. A lot of time is spent waiting for the stars to align so you only get a couple really good chances per session.

At Indy you start with a good draft on the front straight. If you don't get it then that lap is pretty much gone. If you do get the good draft then you look for that LUCKY opportunity for a draft on the back straight. Two drafts in one lap and you are golden. There is actual an opportunity at the end of Sector 2 for another draft on the sweeper.

Unfortunately the traffic can be your friend or just as easily the enemy…. a lot of luck involved.

    2) One big issue that anyone just following Varacins will have is that the Finish line is so close to the last turn… no draft opportunity. The last chance for a conventional pass will be on the back straight which is not that long.

Congratulations to Mike V on his 6th runoffs win. Quite an accomplishment and well deserved. I think the SCCA headline, Formula V-aracins, is a perfect statement of this.

Happy to see Brian Farnham finish so well, 3rd place on the podium!

Congrats to Mike and Al as well! They deserve it as they've built their own car and engines plus have put in thousands
of hours perfecting their car and strategy, not missing much if anything in their preparation to race. If you're going to
beat them, you'll have to be better prepared in car prep, strategy and driving! Congrats again on a well deserved win!

Thanks everyone! What a week to remember!

I had my doubts about SCCA being able to pull this event off due to the sheer number of entries, but surprisingly things went rather smoothly from an operations viewpoint.

I grew up watching the Indy 500 with my dad - first listening to it on the radio with him in 1982, then sitting on his lap as they aired the race at night on TV in 1983. I remember that one in particular as I was trying to understand what happened to Teo Fabi during his pit stop at time I was to young to comprehend much of the details. Then I remember staying up late at night again the following year and watching Rick Mears be victorious and the post race interview he did with Jim McKay at the speedway after it was dark standing buy the scoring tower lit up with his number at the top. To pull into the same winners circle and cross the same line of bricks as all those legends did before me is awesome. To have my dad there beside me made it even more awesome.

The week went fairly smooth. The only drama we ran into was we put what was supposed to be the race engine in for the final day of qualifying. Immediately into the session the clutch started slipping. Afterwards we discovered the main seal was faulty and leaked almost 2 quarts of oil. I had a tough decision to make regarding the engine - take the chance it wasn't damaged by being low on oil or put in the one we used earlier in the week. After looking at the oil pressure data from the session, we decided to go for it. In tear down we saw the bearings still looked brand new, so it turned out to be the right decision.

Overall it was a fun week. Now the focus shifts towards Sonoma and all the challenges that come with that track. See you all there!

IMS had a lot of photographers at work, per the SCCA website.
