    Default 2017 Solo Nationals.

With registration opening soon, who is going?

My SoloVee will be there with John Powell driving. A new engine is being installed right now.

Rebuilding the Reynard's engine has been delayed due to my prostate cancer surgery last fall and a 22% pay cut this year. Getting the Vee ready was quicker and cheaper.

    Default We're in!

David and I are planning to be there. I'm kind of hoping Brandon breaks the pattern of "even years" and wins this year, but maybe David can give him a run this year!!!! Nationals is, by far, my favorite event of the year, great competition, great grip, great friends we only see once a year, great courses, great vacation, etc, etc, etc. Can't wait!!

We need to have more drivers this year than last year!!!

I'm planning to bring the Dulon and Greg should be there also. Points are looking good for Pro Finale registration, so we'll likely be there as well. Vicki will probably not make it out for either with school conflicts.

As I wrote in the first post, I expect to be there with my SoloVee with John Powell driving it. I"m certain that Vern Maxey and Bob Qualkinbush will be there. Possibly Collin Moore, Johnny Billingsley and John Whitling, and Larry Metz.

Been chatting with Larry. He thinks not because he is still busy with the house move. :-(

After a twist of fate, I might be able to make it this year.

I haven't been for a few years - is there still an on-site Hoosier dealer that you can order tires from in advance and then get them installed once you get there? Last time I did that was in Topeka.

I've also heard rumors of some guy having a tire machine in his trailer on-site. True?

Hoosier Tire Midwest always has a semi trailer full of tires there and provides mounting service.

The guy with the mounting machine in his trailer is Ron Ver Mulm of R&S Racing. R&S is also a Hoosier dealer. I buy my tires from Ron. Ron will have a huge triple axle fifth wheel trailer paddocked next to the airfield. Look for his 7/8ths scale orange EM Camaro. Dave Whitworth's EM Mustang will be nearby as will Joe Tharpe's SSP Corvette.

    Fantastic!

As for Monday night dinner, most attend the (free) "Grassroots Motorsports Solo Nationals Welcome Party Presented by BFGoodrich featuring Tacos and Talent".

If you mean where to paddock, many try to get as close to the course as possible. The first couple of rows are taken up by the stewards and the chiefs of specialties. The large regions with large party tents tend to be towards the rear.

That would be awesome! The 1xx drivers are registered without the xx partner so far, so it'll definitely climb.

Any thoughts on car setup on the test & tune course vs. the Nats courses? In my Honda S2000 (Stock class on DOT Hoosiers, then STR on street tires), the Nats courses induced a LOT more understeer compared to the T&T course. I'm coming from a very slippery local lot that tends to make most cars feel very loose, so I'm going to need to dial the car in on the T&T before competition.

    Default Nationals T&T...

As others have noted in the RRAX 2017 Nationals thread, we've also found little correlation between the grip level on T&T course versus the East or West National courses. As such, we only use the T&T course for co-driver introduction/refresh, scrubbing in tires, or last minute mechanical troubleshooting (for which T&T is the perfect venue). That is, be mindful that set up changes made on the T&T will likely not port directly to the Nationals courses.

    Take care,

Hotel and golf cart reservations made. New engine paid for and at Solo Performance Specialties to be installed. New Hoosiers arrived at SPS from R & S on Wednesday. New tires ordered for the trailer. Three locals for John to get used to the Vee before Nats. It's coming together.

    Default Food?

Are there vendors on site or do you need to bring lunch?

I hear there is a dinner/cookout somewhere each evening?

There are usually four food vendors on site. A couple have burgers, dogs, fries, etc. One favorite of many is the Korean taco truck. There is a vendor who sells espressos, lattes, etc., hot chocolate, and freezes and smoothies. He also has pastries in the morning.

Some of the large regions have tents and grill food after the day's runs are over. Most, if not all, welcome visitors, especially if you bring beer from your local craft brewery. The Texans bring their famous Texas hospitality, for example. You might donate food to their cause, too.

Personally, I hang out with some of the Saint Louis people and some other friends from other regions and we go to several restaurants during the week. There is an area downtown near the NU campus with with a large selection of restaurants, bars, and clubs. A tradition for out group which is a bit older, is the Brazilian BBQ followed by ice cream from the NU dairy store.

Edit: I forgot to add that near the site is a grocery store, a convenience store, a burger/taco place and a Chinese restaurant.
