Short box probably preferred, but there are some benefits to a long box. You no longer have the long, long "straight" with the new short track layout so you won't kill the engine with a short box. However, with the short box you have more shifts in the twisty bits. With a long box, you could hold 3rd from 3 to 4 (or not) and maybe again between 5 to 6 and from 6 into 8 (the new "carousel"). With the short box you need to shift to 4th each of those places. The track is also much wider (thus faster) than it was in the old days so even with a long box you might need some of those extra shifts. My times were slightly better with the short box, but not that much and I was also learning the track better too.

Out of curiosity, what is the schedule for FV this year at Brainerd? How many cars show up typically? Is this an SCCA or vintage class?

    Thanks,

    Default SCCA at Brainerd

There are two SCCA races at Brainerd this year; May 27-28 and Sept 2-3. Unfortunately, turnout is pretty light. Bruce set the track record there so he's a good authority.

We're having three race weekends this year Memorial Day, Labor day and July 1 & 2 with Trans Am. Vintage runs with us on these weekends in separate races. You may be able to run with us in SCCA & Vintage. We'd love to have You come join us. We play the Canadian National Anthem, too. Free Barbeque on Friday evening & Dinner on Saturday night. BIR's chief mechanic races an FV with the vintage guys and is most helpful in time of need. The track owners are first rate and Jed runs in FE & GT1 - TRANS AM. The track is wide, smooth and fast with 13 distinct corners. It's a blast to race on ! Jed may even run his IndyCar ?

    Just curious...
Who is "BIR's chief mechanic" that "races an FV with the vintage guys" ?
It's not Mike Vrchota or Dave Bowman, is it ? Or Paul Bastyr ?

I'm sure he's talking about Jon Belanger who races a Vintage AutoDynamics.

I haven't seen Mike or Dave on the track in years. I'll be joining them this year permanently on the sidelines...
Anybody need 20+ years accumulation of FV stuff? I know someone with quite a stash...

Bruce is right about Jon. Always there to lend a hand. We will miss Bruce.... If my memory serves, a few years back I went out for qualifying on a very wet track with slicks as I had no rains mounted. Water was streaming across the track in many areas. Coming into 6, I saw a rooster tail closing rapidly.... I stayed wide on entry and Bruce flew by me like I was in reverse.... After qualifying I asked Jon, "Who was that in the Vee ?" .... Bruce !

    Bruce (or Bruce),
Perhaps we should start a separate thread to discuss the intricacies of Monty Python...
