    Default Monoposto Register rule changes for 2017

    From the Monoposto Register web site:

    The primary changes there are:

    Inclusion of the Hoosier Formula Ford tires based on the lap time and wear experience in 2006.

    Adoption of the SCCA 2015 GCR Kent and Cortina engine rules to replace ours. I believe the most significant changes are a reduction of minimum flywheel weight and the inclusion of aluminum heads.

    Minimum car weights do NOT change.

    Elimination of the requirement that HFF cars have steel shock bodies. Functional requirements are unchanged.

    Nice positive changes. Hopefully in the future Monoposto will realize that weighing the cars with drivers is something most everyone is doing (even modern F-1.) You are giving a huge advantage to light weight drivers. If your driver base is like ours that puts a vast majority of them at a disadvantage on the track.

    I probably should have been more clear about it but, other than owning a Formula Ford, I have no association with Monoposto Register and had no role in the rule changes.

    Personally, I disagree with the allowance of the aluminum head in vintage racing for the simple fact that iron heads are readily available and the only reason to switch to the aluminum head have to do with small but undeniable performance advantages. I think it needlessly adds one more level of expense for anyone that wants to have a car that is prepped to the highest allowable standard. That said, Monoposto is simply being pragmatic and aligning their rules with a number of groups that are already allowing the aluminum head.

    With the use permitted now allowing the aluminum head, the only remaining vintage is the driver and the wine he/she drinks in the evening.

    This was a huge issue for Vintage Racer Group (VRG) and Royale Formula Ford Challenge Series (RFFCS) when it was released and our feedback was made known to Monoposto who obviously has strayed for their core guidelines:

    In the early 2000, yes many club followed Monoposto. However, this is no longer the case and to be honest ... A CRYING SHAME! I hope that more clubs will review the RFFCS rules and regulations and see this is what is meant by ensuring safety yet maintaining authenticity. The Royale Formula Ford Challenge Series even went so far as to balance the respective performance advantages of the various classes within the group through utilizing a spec tire; obviously Monoposto agreed and followed accordingly. We continue to work with West Coast clubs in the hopes that we can create a single set of guidelines as Monoposto no longer represents (IMHO) the majority of Formula Ford clubs that race today; even SVRA has strayed from their path.

    Just my early AM rant .....
