Well that's because he is... Tired of his histrionics and childish attitude. And OK for him to run his team mate off the track when necessary (e.g. Hungaroring, COTA etc.).

Two drivers who would make it all interesting again - Alonso and Vettel

Mercedes will want to defend their constructors championship once again so will need another very good driver. With the new rules I don't think they will be satisfied with a secondary driver running full time. Look at Red Bull & Ferrari pair of drivers, I would say both better combined pairings then what Merc has currently with Wherlin so Merc line up is likely to change.

Alonso is my guess on who they will try to sign by breaking his contract with Mclaren. Toto has said previously if Nico doesn't resign Fernando would be his pick. http://www.planetf1.com/news/seven-p...s-for-rosberg/

Alonso in Mercedes would be unbeatable..

    Forgetting contracts,

How about Vettel to Merc. Grosjean to Ferrari and Rossi to Haas.

Grosjean has been on Ferrari's radar and who better for the only American team?

Default Even though he's got nothing to prove

Nico will get bored. It will take a while......my guess is five years + / -. What? He's going to watch London NFL football on Sundays?........or Man United vs. Chelsea soccer?.......he's not going to have enough family movies from his I Phone video to keep him totally occupied........no.......he'll watch F1 next season......maybe not every race but enough to keep his real self thinking. It's in his blood. We are creatures of habit and it's been his habit for the majority of his life. He'll eventually be behind the wheel of something.....probably not F1 but 4 wheels. It's not like he'll need his Wife's permission but she will not stand in is way when he finally says..........."Honey, I......"

Example: Rusty Wallace from NASCAR was in a Ferrari at Daytona this weekend. I have no idea how old he is or when he was last in a car but becoming comfortable with racing gets in us in time and doesn't leave..........you know.........like was said in 'Pirates'.....it beckons.

McLaren won't release Alonso form his contract now that Button has retired. They need someone with experience to guide Stoffel Vandoorne

They need a name like Alonso more then need him to teach. Mclaren would be in trouble without a big name but if you were Alonso you would likely being looking for a way out if you could find a ride like Mercedes or RB wouldn't you?

    interesting.....
Asked if he will have a say in who his new teammate is, Hamilton says he does not have the same contractual clauses as the likes of Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso when it comes to driver choices.

Nico turned down the opportunity to study at an aeronautical school, perhaps he is interested in revisiting that part of his life. To be able to study whilst having no obligations to income generation would be a dream come true for me anyways.

And yeah, Hamilton is an ass, a talented one. From the Racer article.

Hamilton says Mercedes needs to sign a driver who is able to deliver results on a consistent basis.
Hamilton is saying they need a good number #2.

Often in interviews I thought that Nico spoke like an engineer, and I mean that in a complimentary manner. He seemed to have a deeper understanding of the technical details of his car than his team mate.

"I'm interested to see who would want to be my teammate and I'd respect anyone who would want to."

Bwahahaha. As if it's a mad rush to get over there to drive with Lewis. The attraction is Mercedes Benz, NOT the former WDC.

I'm less interested in who gets the seat than if any other team will be competitive next year. "Which Mercedes will win this week" is boring, no matter who is in the car.

Clearly, not much has changed ......

    From F1 Today:
Lewis Hamilton opted out of the 'wet' testing completely, joking on Wednesday that he would "fake a pulled muscle" before his car mysteriously developed an electrical problem on Thursday morning. But Kimi Raikkonen - a critic of Pirelli's wets last year - was duly in action.
