Format:

front width
front backspace
rear width

front backspace - 3.5"
rear width - 8"
rear backspace - 3.75"
center hole dia - 2.25"
bolt or pin circle - 3.75"
bolt or pin diameter - .54-ish? seems odd, but that's what the calipers say.

I believe the VD pins are Metric, hence the odd inch size. And why I can't use VD wheels on the Bowman without making new pins

Backspace can be defined 2 ways:
1. From the mounting surface to the rearmost extension of the rear rim, or
2. From the mounting surface to the rear flange that the tire seats against.

Since wheels vary significantly in rear flange width, I will use #2 for my dimensions.

rear width: 8"
rear backspace: 4"
center hole dia: 2.25"
hub/pilot thickness: 0.94".
bolt or pin circle: 3.75"
bolt or pin diameter: ~ 0.48" (wheel pin holes = 0.50")

For our wheel sales (Panasport) we use #1.
Our concern is any possible interference that the wheel itself could make with something solid (ie shock-strut, etc.).

how about this? The thickness of the hub/pilot area might be good to know also.

I understand that. However, to maintain the proper location of the tire to the suspension, # 2 is also important.

So it depends on what you are trying to achieve - clearance or geometry.

And if you are trying to specify offset, you need to know #2. #1 only approximately relates to that.

I thought it was important to define the 2 possible meanings of backspace.

Bump. Somebody ought to add the late model VD, the swift, and the lola, Vd, tiga, swift, and royale S2 cars

As best as I have been able to determine, both Swift and VD have "nominal 1/2 inch drive pins. One has a 1/2 hole in the wheel for the drive pin and the other has a 1/2 inch pin and the hole in the wheel is over sized to give some clearance.

how about this? The thickness of the hub/pilot area might be good to know also.

On my wheels the hub/pilot thickness is 0.94".

This is a great post so, my thought is, please provide exactly what the vehicle manufacturer states in the cars make and model specifications initially.

Follow the:" KISS" principal: Keep it Simple (The second S describing me I guess.)

Then state what you believe to be the best specifications in your experience for your particular vehicle make and model designation in a separate paragraph or post. I believer racers/builders like Dave Weitzenhof and Steve Lathrop and other experienced racers who have responded here have very valid thoughts or reasons for different specs. So maybe that reasoning could be stated in a separated paragraph or different posting or provided directly to someone should they like to ask for guidance.

I just need the information for my original 1978 Lola T 620 Formula Super Vee with original front and rear uprights. I believe that the front width should be 6" and rear 8", I just need the rest of the information for when I order a backup set of wheels.

you guys both probably have the correct sizes now. The purpose of the post was to make it easier for people buying wheels to not have to ask the equation "will this wheels fit....?" or for instance, a S2 guy selling wheels into the FC market.

So - measure 'em and post the results!

Everything is the same as Rick's car on my "narrow" suspension '99 except for 5" rear back space.
