    Default Found a mysterious formula vee

    Hey there.

    Yesterday i found a Formula vee in a workshop. The owner doesnt even know what it is.
    I checked the car and it has SCCA stickers on it. Apparently is a LYNX car with zero roll.
    The chasis its weird because it has two round tubes instead of the normal rectangular ones. But the wielding looks very profesional. It has the old style body.

    The car has two brake pumps with break balance, hidraulic clutch, oldstyle wheels and 1600 engine.

    Apparently is a vintage car. The owner didnt let me take pictures of it but the car is for sale. But the body is round and kind of flat....

    Any help with this? Is it a original LYNX?

    Did you see the body color?
    Nick Filip sold his D-13 to someone in Mexico around 1983
    It was easy to spot as it was yellow with black bumble bee stripes on the tail.
    It was originally John Hayden's car from the mid-70's
    Maybe it is this car?

    If it has the original Caldwell 2-shock zero-roll, it is vintage legal per Monoposto rules.
    Just needs a real 1200 vee motor with a fan & genny.

    He's still racing, as recent as last weekend! Next year he'll be in year 49 of his career, most of which has been spent in his beloved D-13!

    Im 42 and remember by dad racing against Al at Westwood when I was 8! Al still has that same infectious grin and is always so much fun to be around. Even in his 80's he gets excited to jump in the car and race wheel to wheel. We all love Al up in here in the Pacific NW!

    Al was one of the "old-timers" when I started racing Vees in '89.

    Ok,

    So i just bought the car, i had the oportunity and took it.

    It is yellow with black.... ill post picks later. It has the zero roll suspension
    and has a 1600 engine and gearbox from a mexican Beetle.

    I cant find any serial number...

    Look for a 6mm +/- hole in the main roll bar behind the driver. There should be some stamped numbers around that area.

    I expect you got that for a good price. Don't let any naysayers convince you its a POS. That was a fine car once upon a time and mostly needs some good attention and updated safety equipment. Carefully remove that funky roll bar extension and put on a small steering wheell ....... With a fresh engine that could easily be a competitive regional car. You will have to see if it fits within your local vintage rules. That looks like almost new "Kazmerak" bodywork. It has a proper front roll hoop which was an issue with the original Caldwells, so that is good. Find some people in your area that want to see you on track with them and let them help you.

    Looks a lot like the John Hayden Sr.-Nick Filip D-13. I sold it to a banker in Guadalajara in the early 80's Delivered it to Laredo,TX as a roller as the Mexican rules used 1600cc engines made in Mexico at that time. Car had a single shock zero roll conversion just like the one in the picture. Car had a winning history in the Midwest before the sale.

    My mechanic is Alberto Mansilla, he was a racing engineer in europe...he knows a lot of Mexcan formula vee championships history.

    He says this car looks exactly as Jose Diaz Garza... Mexican banker from "Banco Internacional".

    Default SCCA Numbers

    The Number is very important.
    This is the SCCA Number when the car was first registered and Homoligated with the SCCA

    The first 2 digits are the Region the car was taken to. In your case Region 29 Which is The Ohio Valley Region.

    The 3 numbers after the dash are just sequence numbers. Meaning that was the 101th car that region registered.
    This number stays with the car and would be in all log books. I assume at this point you did not get a log book with the car. The region does not keep copies of the Log books but I would contact them and see if anyone can give you more information on it. There mabe people there that know your car.
    This can be a bit of a treasure hunt you never know. I found one log book on my Super Vee but I was able to trace everyone that owned so I have the total history. It may not be important to you. But it was to me.

    That is a later, single-shock zero-roll. Better than the original D-13 but not vintage legal in Monoposto Rules clubs.
    But there are enough of these cars sitting around and enough experienced "old-timers" to help you regress it back to vintage (if you so choose).

    Look carefully. Zero roll has two shocks. 2nd one is smaller than first. This was the cure to the SCCA rules that said shocks until 1983 when they changed it to shock(s) This zero roll was an aftermarket piece and saved about 10 lbs from the original D13. It was an expensive modification because it also required a new exhaust system to fit on the car. I believe we did this car after a large wreck at Blackhawk farms destroyed most of the rear end and all those components needed replacement anyway.

    As I recall It was around $10,000 U.S The transaction also included lots of spares and driving equipment (suit,shoes helmet etc).I recall his friends called him "Pepe " I realize this is a common nickname in Mexico.
    The car belonged to Nick Filip from Bloomingdale,il . Nick worked for me at DRE while he was in high school and part time for some time thereafter.

    Pepe is a nickname used for José.... José Días Garza is the guy that bought this car.

    Which would be the actual proceso of the car? Arond 3000 USD?

    What I meant was, it isn't the original D-13 rear suspension...which uses two outboard shocks/springs and is what it needs to be Monoposto vintage legal.
    What's on there now is the later Lynx / Zink style...which uses a single, inboard shock (the second shock is for appearances).
    I believe this photo shows what I'm referring to.

    The Zero roll setup probably came from my shop. How about it being a D13 with a Citation zero roll rear setup?

    Spelling is Nick Fillip, Lives in Bloomingdale,Il Was still there when I got a card from him last xmas.

    I'm sure this is the car I sold to a Mexican from Guadalajara in the early 80's. Nick Filip was the last owner before that and John Hayden Sr. from Milwaukee before him. Nick still lives in Bloomingdale ,Il as I got a Christmas card from him a few weeks ago. The zero roll is indeed a conversion from a kit designed and built by Citation Engineering in Zionsville, In by Steve Lathrop. About two years before the sale the car was in a big wreck at Blackhawk Farms Raceway and repaired in the DRE shop. As I recall Nick won at least one regional race after the repair and before he sold the car. John Hayden Sr. also had a front running record when he owned the car.

    I contacted Barry Baker, and told me that the chasis number 29 - 101 is not issued toa fv but a BS PINTO.
    Im pretty sure the number of this chasis is 29 - 101...
