I read Yates' stuff in C&D back in the day.
For my money, his best work was Sunday Driver, about racing TransAm and SCCA in the early 70s. It had me hooked from the first paragraph: "The helmet bag does it every time. There you are, striding around in public places, holding this black vinyl satchel with 'Bell Helmets' printed on its flanks ... and people automatically think that you are a very tough stud indeed."
