I was fortunate to have gone to 3 ELP concerts back in the 70's. Keith Emerson was a master keyboard player. He revolutionized the use of synthesizers that others would follow.

    RIP Keith

Always got a chuckle when reading the reviewers who called them "pretentious".

    Flamboyant? No question about it.

Way over the top at times? Definitely.

Put on a show that would smoke your brains? Yup.

And they were exactly what the rock world needed at the time!

Exactly....saw them at California Jam in 1974 Emerson playing Karn Evil 9 was amazing.

ELP was the King of Prog Rock in my opinion.

I'm rolling out all my ELP albums right now....a group that Emerson was in prior to ELP THE NICE was great also.

For those of you that have never listened to ELP's rendition of PETER GUNN go check it out.

Fun afternoon, going back in time to re-listen to ELP, King Crimson, Yes, Starcastle, Triumverat, Wakeman, Gentle Giant, Opeth, Rush, Tull, Genesis, and a bunch of other "Progressive Rock" bands of the era!

Just went and listened to a couple ELP songs on youtube. The genius of the synthesizer must be way over my head. When I'm in the mood to listen to a bunch of sounds thrown together, I think Focus hits the spot. I'm also the kind of guy that thinks the newer Genesis was much better than the first so... This must be a thread for the 50+ age group? Happy Monday Gents

Wow, I have all the Yes albums, 2 Starcaste, 2 Wakeman (Journey to the Center of the Earth is wild), And the others.

Saw Rush for the 5th time in concert last year, being a drummer, gotta say Neil is the best on the planet.

    Keith was a magician.

Any of you happen to be Bee Bop Deluxe fans?

Saw Triumvirate at the Star Theater in I believe 1975 in Phoenix Az....highly under rated group.

Bee Bop was ok, but nowhere near the talent of ELP - just another band trying to capitalise on a sound invented by others.

The Moog development was genius at the time. Allowed artists like Emerson, Wakeman and Jan Hammer to develop aural images that were decades beyond what was possible before then.

ds: If you don't understand ELP, don't bother looking up Mahavishnu Orchestra. or even Miles Davis.

Anyone else here a Renaissance fan? Highly underrated and underappreciated group. Annie Haslam is a tremendous talent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEZ5tu1RIJU

    Yes it was.
I never liked the way synths were developed into machines that tried to exactly mimic acoustic instruments though. I'd rather listen to an original Moog.

    Like "Switched on Bach"

I don't especially like digital recording either but that's a different topic.

Well, you can still get an original-design Moog made for your personal pleasure for only $100,000

Ah...........I'd like to have one but I couldn't play it, I'm just a drummer.

If I could understand even 1/1000th of it, I'd like to have Mickey Hart's "The Beam".

And we lose a couple more:

Rush will at least stop touring - Neil Peart cannot physically take doing performances any more

AC/DC - Losing Brian Johnson because of the high probability of total hearing loss. Replacing him with Axle Rose for the remainder of the current tour. Axle Rose?????

    Other noteables:

    Billy Paul
    Merle Haggard
    Maurice White
    Paul Kantner
    Glenn Frey
    Dale Griffin
    David Bowie
    Prince

And a lot more to come, unfortunately.

I speak to people about Renaissance, and the typical response is "Who", so much so that at times I thought I must have made them up in my mind - glad to know someone else out there knows of and like them!
