Default Maximum acceptable play on king pin

    Hi:

Here's a video that shows how much king pin play I have on my set of spindles. This is up and down play, no play side to side.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60y3Q-6b2Dw

The first one has about .015, the second one has about .005. Should either or both be shimmed?

I am tracking down heavy vibration under breaking, it seems to have come back and I wonder if the king play is the cause of it.

    Thanks,
    JS

Default Quixote Racing can fix that

Send those to Dietmar, I did and mine are nice and tight, no play. But call him first for details.

Just change the steel spacer in the assembly, they are available in different thicknesses. Easy job if you have a press.

    Default King Pin

    Jean:

As per our discussion , if you do not have the right washer, you can use a link pin shim in a pinch adapted to the OD of the cover that holds the steel and fiber spacers.
I did notice that the second carrier had a hole that looked like a set screw was there to hold the king pin. This is done if an oversized king pin is not available. Be sure to check that and remove it if there is one as it will mess up the king pin if/when you press out the pin. I would re-shim the first, the second might be OK for now.
Also be sure to mark the bushings as they are not interchangeable. Note the dimple on the bottom one.

    Thanks for the replies.

Dietmar, I also have rocker shaft shims, they might come closer to the size required for the king pin? I will reshim the first one shown in the video.

So I gather a play of .005 is fine, anything lager than this needs to be taken care of?

    Thanks,
    JS

    Default King pin

    Jean:

The rocker shaft (.015) shim should fit. You can always grind down the thicker shim if needed to get the correct spacing.
If it truly is .005 on the other, I would not worry about it right now. Eventually it will need attention.

Check your drums as the source of the vibration. Loose front end part will magnify but not create the vibration.

    Hi Brian:

Thank you for the heads up, I will take a look at the drums.
