    Default Standing Starts?

I'm curious what RPM is a good place to start?

Should we slip the clutch? Or just drop it?

Do you have enough torque to brake the tires loose dumping the clutch? If not don't dump the clutch. What type diff do you have? that will make a difference in how you approach a standing start.

The best way is to sue some combination of slipping clutch and tires.

Given the weight and traction of a F1000, I suspect that the MC tranny might not be up to a brutal launch.

Have you ever launched your street car or a street bike from a dead stop?
Steady RPM and feeding out the clutch works for me.
If it starts to bog, you let out the clutch pedal too quickly, and may need to dip it.
    Practice before the event.
    9k rpm sounds about right.
13k and dumping the clutch is not the ticket.

Does a Yugo or Vespa count?

    Thanks for the advice.

    2 things:
Who ever is on the limiter has no mechanical sympathy for what is between their legs, and
I have no idea why that one bike is smoking like a 2 stroke!

Good launch ='s no bogging, perfect clutch engagement.
GREAT launch ='s the above and carrying the front wheel 4" offa the deck through first gear!

Default In car standing start video

Here's some decent in car video of a standing start we did at Portland USF1000 race last year.

The car in front of me not so good start.

We did 2 standing starts last season, they are a ton of fun!

We broke a trans case on a launch. Do not know if there was another issue, just know that the case cracked about 1/4" right at the output shaft.

I suggest being a bit gentle, whatever that means.

The hotter the tires are the harder it is on the drive train also.

Im having to use about 11k RPM and slip the clutch almost all the way through 1st gear. if the wheels stop spinning the engine will bog. a tiny amount more clutch is all that is needed to fix that and keep the wheels spinning a little, you need to maintain a little bit of wheel spin to maximise traction. (slip angles etc...)

I guess we'll find out tomorrow... I've arranged a 30 minute test for standing starts at PBIR in the morning.

    Thanks for all the advice!

IMO 11K seems a bit aggressive, but it's your engine. I used less than that - closer to 8500 RPM, and never had an issue afterwards.

It's all about how you let the clutch out - you have to slip it, and slip it well (without jumping the start - ahem, Mr. Hickman).

I agree with John, 11k too many revs likely tearing stuff up.

Hay if the flagger aint lookin' whats a 1/10th tire revolution....see it in F1 all the time.

I'm full on jealous that the East Coast boys are doing a standing start at Road Atlanta.

If it wasn't a 5k tow for me I'd be there, RA is one of my all time favs.
