    Default Trans and Engine Weight

Does anyone know what the trans weighs (with or without axles, tubes, brakes and wheels - please specify which, or whatever combination thereof) and a complete engine?

    Thanks in advance.

    Jim,

I have the tranny, complete drum to drum at 144 pounds, including gear oil, starter, and clutch slave cylinder. I weighed much of this stuff by standing on a reasonably accurate bathroom scale and subtracting my weight, so keep that level of accuracy in mind.

I have the engine weight (1200 not the 1600) at 182 pounds, including oil, clutch, and exhaust system. Some weights are from the GCR minimum, some parts weighed and some "estimated".

It's what I would consider close, maybe, I hope...

    Default I agree mostly

    Jim

I shipped a trans center section and it was 70lbs (75 in the box). I'd bet the tubes disks, calipers etc are about the same 70+lbs so the 144 estimated by BLS seems pretty accurate.

Regarding the engine our crank is much heavier and the same for the rods pistons and cylinders. If you used 200lbs I think you'll be +/- 2%. Also depending on how you configured a motor oil cooler, brand of heads, valve covers or whether of not you remove heat sink on manifold you can be talking 10lbs.

Default A guess and maybe a mixed metaphor

    Ball joint

I weighed all this stuff individually when I built my first car but of course can’t find my spreadsheet from 2006. I’d bet Jim Schings has shipped quite a few of these could get you pretty close.

If I correctly recall (don’t bet on it) that the dust cap to dust cap weight of the front end was about 100Lbs. No shocks or mounts. That means buying the whole package of new VW FST mechanicals 100+200+140/$7000 is less than $16 a pound. That’s right up there competing with some cuts of meats.

    Default warning

    Well Yes

But you can't say you weren't warned by the title. Fun on an an otherwise dull afternoon.

I need to go to the track and hear some serious noise.
