The practice standing start went off well yesterday with the drivers using the grid markers from CART when they raced here. A second practice standing start at 5:00 today with the feature race on Sunday 1:00 pm having a standing start.

Today's race at 1:40 pm will be rolling.

Gary Hickman had gearbox issues and John LaBrie diff. They were both working late to fix those when I left the track yesterday.

I've been waiting to enter for a while but the access road across the track has been closed a couple of sessions now (last one emergency) so as soon as I can get to paddock will check on their status.

    Updates coming later.

Larry has way more laps than anyone else at Portland and his car is fast.

Quali 1 wasn't bad and most were able to get a good lap in. Quali 2 was a joke, fifteen minutes with a black flag all in the middle. Almost everyone had their quail lap come from Q1

Sorry for the lack of updates. Woke up Sunday sicker than I've been in a long time (and still a bit sick) Spent most of Sunday morning at the hotel trying to recover. I wasn't able to make it out to the track for the race. When I was well enough to travel delays and other insanities not of my making meant I didn't get home until after 2 this morning. I was able to post a couple of photos Sunday morning while sick in bed at the hotel but nothing else the rest of the day.

I did call Todd Butler to make sure they could continue with the standing start. He assured me they had everything they needed as we had spent the previous 2 days going over the grid positions, separation, and procedures. There was no practice standing start Saturday because of on-track incidents but we did have a success one on Friday.

I do have a many photos that I will be posting on the usf1000 website later this week. As soon as I get caught up on things and feel better I will post race report/results.

    Thanks,

    WOW! This photo is weird!

It's the exit of Festival Corner which is a very tight right and left. Then this image which is a really short straight run up to the kink you see. This photo makes it look like Interstate 5 wide and a mile long run??? How'd the image get such a distorted look? Makes the F1000's look like slot cars. The road just is NOT that wide through there.

Image appears to be taken from a long distance using a telephoto lens. Does not appear to be distorted, it is just the way the image was taken/photographed. IMO

That's correct. I was taking photos with a Nikon D5300 with a 55-300mm telephoto lens. I was on the grandstand at the Chicane shooting up the track. The Ross Wolf photo was taken from the top of the grandstand. The Larry Vollum photo from the grandstand at the hairpin before the front straight. All three were taken using the same lens. For the photos in the paddock I used 18-55mm lens.

    Default Team Phoenix back home

Just got in from a very long drive from Portland.

I couldn't stay on pace with Vollum and had to settle for 2nd both days but in all I felt pretty good about things. I hadn't driven at Portland since 1982 so I was learning the track the entire time.

I've got some real good in car video of Randy Cook and I battling on Saturday, we changed position many times. Also have in car from Sundays standing start, that was fun. I'll see if I can get it up on youtube soon.

Thanks to the Oregon Region for putting on a great event.

Hope to see a race report up soon Thomas.

    Default USF1000 PIR round 5 race 1

Saturday PIR race #1. Very early on in the race my right front wing flap decided to detach itself. Spent most of the race dealing with the handling effect from that.

Rand Cook and I changed position several times. Note toward the end of the race the flagger at the start finish threw out the yellow flag, I checked up then about as fast as he put it out there he pulled it back in, Randy went smokin' on by me. You will see me throw my hands up in total shock.

Randy Cook is fun to race with, I have a high degree of trust in his driving ability.

Larry Vollum was in a completely different time zone from me. All I could do was watch him check out and pull away.

    Vollum Sweeps Portland

Fremont Ca/Green Bay, WI (July 8, 2014) – Larry Vollum swept the field to take twin victories at Portland in Race 5 and 6 of the 2014 Hoosier Racing Tires US Formula 1000 Championship West presented by Sunoco Race Fuels, Replay XD, George Dean Racing Engines, Jongbloed Racing Wheels, Hyperco, Hurley Race Products and Taylor Engineering and Sprocket Specialists.

Under perfect blue skies and warm temperatures the field took the green flag for the Saturday race with pole sitter Vollum streaking out to a commanding lead that he never relinquished. Behind Vollum Gary Hickman and Randy Cook put on a passing duel throughout the race for second place with each driver working hard to get the advantage over the other. The outcome was eventually settled in Hickman’s favor with Cook settling for the final podium position third.

Back-aways from the Hickman-Cook battle John LaBrie drove a lonely race to take fourth with Wolf finishing fifth after a visit to the pits half way through the race.

Sunday’s feature race saw the cars line up for their standing start under another perfect Portland day. As the green flag dropped Vollum once again shot out to a commanding lead with leaving the remaining drivers to fight over the remaining positions. In a near carbon copy to Saturday’s results Hickman once again finished second with Cook third, LaBrie fourth, and Eitel fifth.

    Default Portland Video

Larry dominated no doubt! Gary and I had a very close race Saturday that would have been even better except for a couple of mistakes. (That waving black bordered white flag sure looked like a checker to me! After 30 years of a starter's single digit indicating one more lap, I needed more training on the new "1 lap to go" procedure! Damn!)

Here's my video. (Forgive the weird little rotating cottonwood tree piece in front of the lens. This isn't a RePlay feature.)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSPT2nOh2KQ

And thanks Gary for a great race and the mutual respect on and off track!

Default Portland RePlay, 2nd race video with Standing Start

Finally figured out how to splice two videos together. Except for the start it's just me driving around PIR. Just fast enough to secure the Western Conference Championship.

Looking forward to racing for wins next time.
