FORMULA 600 CHALLENGE SERIES RESULTS AT THE JUNE SPRINTS

This event marked the debut of the Formula 600 Challenge Series tractor trailer and hospitality area. The huge canopy provided ample space for seven F600’s and the hospitality area with five tables and cooking area. The weather was unusually cool and windy for most of this race weekend, this is good for more horse power at this high speed road course but not ideal for tire grip at the 4 mile long iconic Road America which has the longest high speed road course curves in the country.

For the Saturday 10 lap sprint race Clint McMahan set the pace winning by a 1.49 margin. Clint improved his lap time to a 2:21.9. The rest of the entries finished in this order – Matt Strand, Fred Edwards, Tom Edwards, George Fox, Ryan Barth and Carl Maier. Calvin Stewart did not race on Saturday due to outside track commitments.

For the Sunday 13 lap main race, Clint just checked out immediately with no one able to keep up with him, clicking off consistent 2:22’s almost the whole race. The battle to watch was Calvin Stewart, Matt Strand and Herb Noble (2 stroke) as they swapped positions almost every lap until Herb Noble spun in Canada Corner in front of Matt Strand allowing Calvin Stewart to get away and finish 2nd. All this allowed Fred Edwards to move up to 3rd followed by George Fox, Ryan Barth, Matt Strand, Carl Maier and Tom Edwards who had a clamp on a water hose come loose on the 6th lap.

Road America also awarded money and contingencies for the podium finishers which made this race especially sweet. The Formula 600 Challenge Series will be having its third round at Mid-Ohio on the July 4th weekend.

The Formula 600 Challenge series was developed to help promote an affordable open wheel formula car to showcase talent without large financial race budgets. The Formula 600 open wheel cars use a 600cc motorcycle engine and a 6 speed sequential transmission revving up to 15,000 rpm with speeds capable in excess of 135 mph. The sound of these cars is likened to F1 cars.
