Default Stohr 2008 head rest /collar

We have recently purchased a 2008 Stohr f1000 and I am looking for ideas as to how to make the neck collar able to be released quickly. At the moment it is locked by two pins that I would hate to have to undo quickly and I am completely stuck in the car unless I can remove the collar.

Just seeing if anyone have some easy solutions to this.

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers

    Ben

    Benno,

My Stohr collar is secured with the same hex head dzus buttons used to secure the body panels. Take a few of your spare buttons and drill/tap threads for a 1/4x20 stud. Then add wing nuts or small phenolic handles and epoxy in place. These will allow you enough leverage to remove the buttons with gloves. I'll post a photo of my solution later.

I don't know what you have, but I have been thinking about using these:

You can add a strap to make it easier to grip.

The self-eject wing-head Dzus is what Stohr provided when I purchased my WF-1 cockpit surround.

Why not just use 'push release' hitch pins -- like stock on an FE ??
Similar to this .. but you can probably find cheaper.

And probably something with less protrusion too...
or maybe put it on the BOTTOM or TOP instead of INSIDE.. ?

Years ago I modified an older Citation to have an easily released surround. The back center had a pin that stuck back into a hole ( for vertical alignment), and the 2 sides had pins near the front edge that protruded sideways throuh a panel, and were secured by an R-clip. Attached to the clip was a cord that the driver (and corner workers) could easily find and pull to remove the pins. The surround sides were then easily poped out and the whole thing removed.

You could possibly do a version of that,in place of the dzus fasteners.

I get in and out of the car without removing the cockpit surround, and I've never snagged anything on the wing heads. They don't protrude that far.

I like Richard's idea, something that can just be yanked in an emergency, no fiddling and turning. I think they also make hitch pins the pull to release, instead of pushing.

Gday guys and thanks for your responses. I really like the idea of the Dzus sliding clip which is similar to the r clip, and having a toggle attached. currently we have the wing-head Dzus and it is really fiddly and I wouldn't want to have to do it in an emergency and it would probably be impossible if you were on fire and your hands contracted. And having been in a car on fire once I know you are in a real rush to get out

Now I just have to see if I can make it fit, if it works ill post a picture.

David unfortunately my 6"4' frame doesn't allow me to slip out... my shoulders get in the way.

    Default Curious:

Have you actually tried to get in and out of the car w/ your HANS and helmet on?
The reason I ask is I see people get into the car and THEN try to get their headsock/helmet/HANS all buttoned up and it just seems bass ackwards(!)

Are you a pretty husky fella? I've not seen many cars that required removal of the head surround to get out, and certainly not cars w/ such a generous cockpit opening like your car (or mine)...

I drove a car over the weekend that had really neat sliding latch type affair, no loose parts, just align the hole of the latch over the ball/stud on the bodywork, and then slide the latch back to capture the ball stud. The onlt reason to remove the collar on that car was to access a plate to remove and refuel.

I'll look for an image on Pegasus or McMaster and post it up.
This method is so cool I'll be adapting it to my RFR!

Sometimes there's a good reason for doing this. I can't see to fasten my belts with the helmet and HANS on.

"You must use The Force, David" OR Have a suitably hot chick on staff to do up the belts!

She's tried, Glenn, but it's a long way from the side of a WF-1 to the bottom of the tub, and she doesn't have enough leverage for the lap belt.

    Default I hear ya...

Have you seen the adjustable "pull up" lap belts?
In my FM days I could do it all myself, as soon as I got the VD RF99 FC/ FB car it was "Hellllllp, anyone, gimme a hand, Pleaaaaaaaaaase!"

I agree, I get in the HAN's on, helmet off, so I can see what I'm doing getting belted in. I have no problems getting my helmet/tethers on.

    Hi Glenn

Not a chance of getting out even with my helmet off, i'm not fat in any way and have a 33 inch waist, but still get stuck all the same. the cabin has plenty of room, but the head rest constricts the exit space.

If you can get some photos that would be great.]

    Thanks
