F600 CHALLENGE: ROUND FOUR RESULTS AT MID-OHIO

Except for the last part of Sunday afternoon’s race, the weather was just dreadful and really changed the order in the series points standing. We have learned that this time of year at Mid-Ohio is the rainy season. For the Saturday race, only a few of the cars were able to avoid going off course at least once and two were damaged – Chris Ross and Carl Maier. The finishing order is as follows:

  • Matt Strand
  • Tom Edwards
  • Clint McMahan
  • Fred Edwards
  • Jason Fitzpatrick
  • George Fox
  • Carl Maier
  • Chris Ross
  • Aaron Ellis
There were several items of note. Clint McMahan brought out a brand new Scorpion F600 and it is still in the de-bugging stage. George Fox, a novice driver, rented Clint’s #34 car for this event and acquitted himself by avoiding any off-course excursions. And Aaron Ellis, who just finished second at the Runoffs in F500, brought his new F600, which was converted from his first F500 chassis, but unfortunately brought only intermediate rain tires and decided to come in early for this rain race.

For the Sunday race, the weather started to clear up right away but all the drivers had been shell shocked from all the rain sessions before and all decided to go out on rain tires. Surprisingly, none of the rain tires chunked. At the start, Clint McMahan came right up to the front at Turn #1 and proceeded to just motor/splash away from the field. The rest of the field picked up the pace as the track dried but there was no catching Clint. This time around no one went off-course and Aaron Ellis showed his driving prowess by coming from dead last to finish fifth. Unfortunately, Chris Ross fixed his car but got a stomach bug overnight and was forced to drop out after the first lap. The finishing order is as follows:

  • Clint McMahan
  • Matt Strand
  • Jason Fitzpatrick
  • Fred Edwards
  • Aaron Ellis
  • Carl Maier
  • George Fox
  • Tom Edwards
  • Chris Ross
The Formula 600 Challenge series was developed to help promote an affordable open wheel formula car to showcase talent without large financial race budgets. The Formula 600 open wheel cars use a 600cc motorcycle engine and a 6 speed sequential drive chain revving up to 12,000 rpm with speeds capable in excess of 135 mph. The sound of these cars is likened to F1 cars.
