Preventing DNFs
Doug Sontag ran off a corner during the morning session at the Glen Saturday. It was cold (46 degrees) wet and slippery and obviously grip was in short supply. He ended up severely bending the beam on the right had side of the car. His crew borrowed the Bill Bonow-on-car beam straightener.
On any car with the VW H beam it is possible to bend the beam even when the car hits something as soft as a tire barrier. If the beam is really badly bent it means often that it must be cut apart to attempt to save the springs and/or sway bar. Minor bends in a FST beam can be taken care of by using the FST series on-car beam straightener . Bill Bonow built this unit to carry to the races to help eliminate DNF’s among the competitors.
The picture below show how this device works. The Sontag crew used is to good advantage and Doug never missed a session and finished a strong fifth on Sunday.
