Vintage FF distributor

Is there a particular make and model of dizzy that is preferred for vintage FF?? Heard something about a Bosch?? Let me know so I can start hunting for one.

Mike, mine has a Bosch with # 0-231-170-317 on the body and uses a Pertronix module. My understanding is this distributor is no longer made but I hope I'm wrong about that!

If you can't find a Bosch, I have a spare motorcraft distributor that will work. They are vintage legal with points and condenser.

I always change to a Motorcraft distributor. Here is my thinking; when GM went to High Energy ignition systems they increased the size of the distributor cap to prevent cross-firing, so the larger motorcraft cap will have that advantage over the smaller Bosch cap. The trick is to get the proper point set!

I use an Actron automotive volt/ohm meter that has a dwell meter function. Works great.

Lucas is also a choice, as well as a Fomoco, with Bosch being the third most "standard" units you will come across.

If you need a distributor prepped For FF i do them. Or if you need a complete distributor I have a few of those as well.

And I am always looking for cores...

Bestek used to offer these on fleabay. We've bought four or more from them. All good quality, reasonable price, multiple curves and easy shipping.

I've got a tub of Motocraft units. Call me. Accel makes a really good (heavy spring) set of points for the Motorcraft. So did Echlin (NAPA) but I think I got the last 6 or socouple of years back. Can't remember the part #s off the top but will look in the trailer when I get a chance. You can use the Bosch points, but I think you have to drill an extra hole or something. The Motocraft lobes aren't typically 90 degree spaced from factory but can be reprofiled (just like rockers) to get perfect 90 degree spacing. Or you can put in a Pertronix trigger unit.

If you're thinking about one of the new Pertronix units, get a prepped one from Ivey or someone else. The curve isn't as advertised. I've seen as little as 5-7 degrees of advance and very sticky mechanisms. All stamped parts and some pretty crudely stamped ones at that. Can be made into a nice unit but you better have a distributor machine, Dremel mototool, distributor springs (good luck finding) and lots of time. Also the trip magnets aren't on perfect 90 degree spacing. Seen a couple at as much as 1.5 degrees off. Ponderosa Mustang on fleabay has about the best price.

CS755- called out as "standard"- tested at 22 oz. tension
CS7550- called out as "heavy dut"- tested at 28-32 oz. tension

Accel
101228- advertised as 32 oz tension. The set I have tested at 28.oz
110129- advertised as 48 oz tension, good to 9500 RPM, they say!!!!!

The NAPA CS7550 and Accel 101228 look identical right down to the red insulating block. $10 cheaper MSRP at NAPA though.

Had one loose Bosch distributor with used, unknown origin points. Its points tested at 18 oz. Hmmmmm.....

It's my understanding that Pertronics sells a complete distributor unit that is equiv. to the Bosch for the 1600 Kent. Sorry, no part number or source, but worth researching since the price and quality were purported to be very good. And yes, it uses the Pertronics breakerless internal ignition module.

If I find out details in my research I'll post here.
