    Default Engines

Given that the Suzuki GSXR is the engine of choice for most at the moment, are there specific model years that seem better than others or are all years considered fairly equal. Do the newer (2011/2012/2013) engines have the issues of dry sump, ECU etc sorted?

Are there any other engines, BMW, Aprilia, Kawasaki etc looking promising for the not too distant future?

    Thanks

    Ian

    Ian -

    Here are the Cliff's notes:

    - 2007-2008 Suzukis are what nearly everybody is using.
    - 2001-2006 Suzukis are not really used any more, but the engine mounts, oil pans etc are nearly identical etc.
    - 2009+ Suzukis all seem to have various fatal flaws, among them oiling, and slightly reduced power output relative to the '08.

    - 2011 Kawi seems to be the most likely engine that most folks will eventually move to, once it is sorted out by the bleeding edge guys, though it seems to necessitate a dry sump due to its internal configuration.

    - BMW 1000RR is another possibility, though ECU issues prevent that from being feasible for the time being, plus it is also more expensive to acquire than the Japanese engines.

    - The other exotics will not (I hope) become common due to the rarity and cost of acquisition.

    Hope that helps,

    -Jake

Sal at Philly Motorsports is running the Honda, Although he and Johnathan have had the typical issues that go along with developing a new engine, it seems to be another competitive alternative.

FWIW, Max Stratton, the owner of Max BMW can tune the factory ECU of the RR1000.

I just sent that question off to him.
Should be able to just turn off the immobilizer in the code but I will let him answer, I was only active on this project in the early goings.

Reply back from Max is essentially yes, he can turn off the immobilizer so the ECU can be run without the key. At this time he has not done so since the need has not come up.
For the race bikes he runs he switches off the anti wheelie and traction control. He expects there maybe other things that could be done for use in cars.

    Default It's not that easy

For years folks have thrown these exotics out there as a "sure thing", but the reality is they are highly:
    Expensive,
    Rare,
    Unproven.

If you think the anguish on a racer's face when he grenades a common Japanese multi is bad...

    Default Motors

There are a few that are still running the Suzuki K6(05-06) motors. They are about 1K cheaper than the K7 &8. If you are considering the K7&8 motors you can use the K6 while you set the car up and learn to drive it. BUT the exhaust header does NOT cross over between the two motors.

There are adapters to make that combo work.
